Not sure if AlSal will have a meltdown, but 13:00 is pretty tough -- I know the fun runners here on LR think it's chump change, but that's a great mark. (I grew up in the Rono era where his 13:08 and 13:06 were considered legendary.)

* Not sure why Ben True gets the proverbial free pass on LRC for skipping nationals, while Rupp gets blasted for running and winning nationals. Odd place, this is.

As an aside, isn't it a bit amazing that Ritz still has a faster 5000 PR than Rupp?

to me this proves what people were saying in some other thread recently: Rupp refuses to ever lead a race. He made it public that this was an American record attempt, and instead of going for that he just hung in the pack in a slow race and couldn't break 13. Maybe he just didn't have it today like he thought he would, or maybe, unlike most runners, he doesn't have the balls to strike out on his own and lead a race. Rupp needs to learn that there is such a thing as taking charge of a race and giving it your all instead of just always hanging in the pack no matter how slow the pace is. Rupp has once again proven that he'll never be a world beater at 5000m. As good as he is, he is just a sit and kick runner, like is buddy Farah.

True should have absolutely run nationals. He's the kind of guy who could benefit by winning a US title. That being said what a letdown of a race.

Also looks like Solinsky still greater than Ruppster at 5K. Not even a good kick for ruppy, prob 57 high off a slow pace. LOL to all the idiots claiming he's in 12:45 shape, nobody in the entire field is in anything close to that right now, let alone 4th place rupp.

Drop the Solinsky fanboy nonsense. He is DONE and Rupp's career is about 1000 times better.

Rupp IS in 12:45 shape, but you can't run that sort of time when you leave your testicles in Eugene.

True should have run nationals I guess, but he wasn't beating Lagat and maybe not Bumbi or Mead either. Is getting 2-4 worth passing on a PR opp? I think so but maybe he disagreed.

Problem is, Farah succeeds as a sit and kick runner. Rupp is a "sit and kick" wimp who continually gets 4th-7th. He'll never be a GOAT because he does nothing legendary. a 26:44 time trial where he didn't lead a step until 9200m is not a legendary race, it's a solo time trial. Just like all his other performances, boring, unexciting and forgettable.

And Rupp is still greater than Solinsky at every other distance. Honestly, would you rather have Sol's better 5,000 PR or Rupp's overall career and PR's from 1500 to 10,000?

If he had to lead from 2 km out, he wouldn't have broken it anyways. His only hope was that the race would be fast enough to pull him to the time.

Looks like the long layoff -- last Diamond League 5k was 6/11 in Oslo -- affected guys sharpness. Slow last lap. Poor races by Ndiku and Gebriwhet.

I'm not a Rupp fan, so I'm glad he didn't get the record. However, I still think he can get the record, but he just needs the right race. If the race had been won in 12:48 today, he'd probably have placed about the same, but been comfortably under Lagat's time. It just seems like as much as everyone will always say "he should just go all out like a time trial, and if he get's outkicked, so be it", that's not going to happen. His MO is to stay behind the main few guys and try to outkick them, and all evidence suggests he will stick with that strategy.

I look for Salazar to try to organize a better pacemaking set-up. Not only will there be pacemakers, but the top contenders will also have to be paid to go with the pacemakers, so that Rupp can follow them.
