Bekele, a 10K guy, ran 3 major 1500s and didn’t come in worse than 2nd in any. Jakob came in 4th both today and in Eugene and hasn’t won anything faster than 3:37.42.

Sorry. That can be construed as that. Didn’t mean to go all Coevett here. I more meant the famous race where Ryun went toe to toe with Snell and beat him, as a high schooler. Jakob did that today to Centrowitz (again...) and fared well against the rest of the field. I said he might be more talented than Ryun because he’s 5th on the junior list.

Many East Africans are not their stated age. Certainly not all—for instance, I believe George Manangoi is the age he claims he is, but despite the race last week, I think Jakob is a better runner than he is. If George runs 3:31 soon, I’ll have to reconsider. Jakob is 5th on the junior list. Those above him may well be older than their stated age. As I said above, I’m not qualified to know who is. I think Ronald Kwemoi, the junior record holder, is as talented or more than Jakob, since he was new to the sport when he ran his 3:28.81, but I’m dubious about his age. Jakob is a year younger than Kwemoi said he was when he ran his 3:28, and he ran just over 2 seconds slower. I think that’s about equal talent.

Who cares? Jakob ran only 1 major 1500. Other was a mile. You don't get credit for non-championship placings. You get credit for time.

1 major 1500? That’s just not true at all. Monaco was his only fast 1500, not his only major 1500.

If time’s all you consider, Bekele’s 1500s are 3:33, 3:33, and 3:32. Jakob’s best 3 1500s are 3:31, 3:36, and 3:37.

Timothy can thank Abel, who suddenly had lots of extra time and energy, and took over potato planting so that Timothy could inherit Kiprop's mantel at this meet.

Jakob started out his outdoor season with a 3:39 1500m at the Payton Jordan Invitational. He has managed to shave off 8 seconds from that time in just one season. You say that Hicham and Jakob are two totally different runners, well yes, they are indeed. Jakob's progression is outstanding and if he continues to do so at that rate, the world record will soon be his.

Those guys who said drug use would be cranked up and enforcement slackened when it comes to E. Africans and third world runners in general are starting to look like geniuses.

Canova is a walking Bandini sack. Period.

Jakob is eventually going to stick with the 5k and/or steeple. He really doesn't have the raw speed of true top 1500/milers. Then again, neither do many of the doped up Africans. That's why we've seen comparative slugs like Lagat run 3:26, or Mo run 3:28 and finish long races with such fast drives over his last lap or two. Without drugs guys physically incapable of running 1:46 clean would never sniff 3:28.

Jakob is better trained than Ryun, but Jakob is a distance runner. If Ryun had been trained like Jakob it's likely he'd be running 3:30 or faster at 17, that's how freaky he was. Ryun's training actually destroyed him, just as his coach really did ruin a lot of other runners. Ryun was so talented and bizarre in the way he could handle that type of training that he still managed to succeed for a while. Like Bannister posited, Ryun was physically capable of 3:45 in the mile, and that's in the days before EPO.

George isn't a teen. He's early 20's. Look at closeup pics of him. He's talented but no teen. Kiprop was amazing as a teen but then he hit the needle when he peaked out.
