Is Chris Solinsky finished?

I would like to assume Schumacher or any coach is smart enough to know not to let Chris race these workouts. That said, no one from Schumacher's group has ever successfully recovered from a layoff. Bairu, Nelson, Solinsky, Fernandez, Lincoln... Webb is the closest to a real comeback. Am I missing anyone?

What about Jager, he had a bad injury, but he came back stronger than ever, I mean just look at him! Why is it so hard for some guys to come back and some not?

CS doesn't have a whole lot of road performances. The ones that I can think of are Falmouth back in 2012 where he ran over 35 min for 7 miles. The recent NYRR Dash to the finish line 5K which he ran in 14:15. This one I know doesn't really count but he did pace Teg in the Chicago Marathon, his 1/2 marathon split was low 1:05. So his "best" race was that 5K in NYC. I think CS needs to focus on the roads, once he gets his legs back and starts training for those kinds of races he will get better and better. I see no reason why he can't run 2:10 in the marathon one day.

good point. cats, cats are the way to go. much better athletes than dogs and their mind games will prepare you for difficult races with surging. plus your lungs get strong, dealing with all that cat hair and the subsequent allergies. leave the house, and you feel like a new man/sexy woman

Solinsky at his age (only 27) is too old to make a comeback at 5000 or 10,000. He still could get down to 13:20 and 27:30 and make another Olympic team in the marathon. And make a living and travelling the world but he probably is struggling with settling for that. Its basically what Tegenkamp is doing now, stretching out his running career as long as he can.

He will decide how much longer he will devote to running. All those guys know they will never experience life greater than what they have known at a young age as world class runners.

So everybody hangs on as long as they can.

You don´t kill yourself (figurately speaking) just in one year. Injuries happens easily when trying to get even better to take WC/olympic medals, maybe this happened to Solinsky. It´s just hard to get to that high level after an injury, it takes a couple of healthy consistent years in a minimum.

Your body changes throughout your career, so your training should change too, doing exactly the same training that led Solinsky to the AR won´t probably work.

Yes and No. Solinsky is most definitely done on the competitive 5000 meter circuit. Breaking the 13 minute barrier is highly improbable, and the likelihood of another 12:55.53 from him is minuscule. The same goes for 10000 meters. Although is the former AR holder, there is no chance of him meddling in the event in a major world competition, or even a diamond league meet. However, he does show some promise in the road racing circuit. Although he faltered this weekend over 12 km, a solid half marathon from Solinsky (62-63) minutes would not be surprising. So no, he is not done. Rather, he just need a change of discipline.

How is 62-63 minutes for a half marathon a sign that he isn't done? People are running marathons faster than that.
