Prefontaine had every American record from 2k through 10k at once, similar to Fisher. Fisher is a lot faster than Pre but has similar finishes at world events. However, look back not only to the shoes Pre had but the lifestyle. Pre was struggling for money. He was not on a big contract with a big, high quality team and able to go up for altitude stints. He also only had 24 years to reach his best. That's just two years out of college. He died through his own fault, but then maybe he wouldn't have been drinking so much with a big contract and support, no homelessness, etc.

Good for Grant Fisher. However, his time needs historical context. From 2015-2019, the average 100th world time in the 3000 was around 7:57. For 2022, 2023, it is 7:50. There has been a shift in race times and they are not directly comparable to times run before 2020.
For the 1500m, 100th best was about 3:38 2015-19, for 22/23 it is 3:36.
For the 5000m, 100th best was about 13:26 2015-19, for 22/23 it is 13:19.
For the 10000m, 100th best was about 28:10 2015-19, for 22/23 it is 27:55.

If the Africans had been really rolling back when Pre was running I'd guess that the WR for 5000 would have been under 13:05 during the Pre era. Instead it was 13:13.
Besides the technology changes, as you said... Pre did a bunch of things that he wouldn't be doing now. Like working. Partying. Eating poorly.
Training methods are so much more refined today as well. I have no doubt that Pre and his contemporaries would be well under 13 minutes today. Pre probably would weigh about seven lbs less. Would have a VO2 max in the high 80s. If Pre was as mentally tough as they say then I assume he would be as mentally tough as today's guys. .... he would have the same physiological make up as the best elite runners of today. Basically, he did anyway... even back then. 84.5 ml/kg.
