Sorry, that's a ridiculous comment. Nuguse is the real deal, but to dismiss accomplished sub-3:30 runners who have World and Olympic medals is just hubris. He's also not the only young talent in the world - for example Matt Stonier is younger than Nuguse and ran 3:32 last year.
Hubris is if I said I was the only real threat to Jakob, not extolling the other worldly talents of Nuguse. What’s ridiculous is to mention Matt Stonier and Yared Nuguse and talent in the same sentence.
Sorry WOM, he’s right. You somehow forget how quickly things can change in elite 1500 running: think how far Nuguse has come in a matter of months, and yet you’re ready to declare that Nuguse is the only threat to Jakob in the next few years…that’s silly.
The crazy thing is, that Jakob probably could run 3:46 and still beat Nuguse.
Also, Nuguse will run 3:28-3:29 1500m this summer.
Can Jakob close sub 26 in a 3:47 race? No. Yared didn’t even look tired after he finished. He defiantly could’ve cut more time on the third lap so there is room for improvement.
Yeah, but Jakob wouldn't let 59 3rd lap happen. But I don't think he would be Yared today. But of course, he's the Olympic Champion.

That's really not what hubris means
Hubris (/ˈhjuːbrɪs/; from Ancient Greekὕβρις (húbris) 'pride, insolence, outrage'), or less frequently hybris(/ˈhaɪbrɪs/),[1] describes a personality quality of extreme or excessive pride[2] or dangerous overconfidence,[3] often in combination with (or synonymous with) arrogance.[
These other guys have been around for a while and I think we have a pretty good sense of their ceilings. Cheruyiot is on the decline. Yes, just as Wightman did last summer, one of them might pop off and threaten or even defeat Jakob. Yared, however, is just emerging and it seems his talent level is off the charts. He’s only been a pro for 6 months, he’s barely been at altitude and he’s already blowing up. In fact he may well be more talented than Jakob when you think of all the miles and reps Jakob has run compared to Yared. No, Nuguse is the real and I think only serious threat to Jakob’s overall ascendancy over the next few years.

Nuguse has had an amazing couple weeks and is no doubt the real deal, but people definitely need to slow down. Ingebrigtsen is only 22 years old and is coming off his best season ever. Yes, he lost the one race that mattered, but it took an epic performance from Wightman + mistakes from Ingebrigtsen for him to come up just short. Plenty of other world class guys were left in the dust.
Nuguse is looking like a medal threat but let’s see how he stacks up with the rest of the world before declaring him the chosen one and handing him the gold.

Ok, ok just caught up in the moment. Still, not only have Nuguse’s last two races been shockingly good, he’s literally just started training like a pro. Let’s put it this way, other than Jakob, who do you have as your pick for the summer? I’ll pick Nuguse right now and you and High Hopes and anybody else can pick their best non Jakob runner and we will circle back and assess how they did in September. I’ve seen enough, and barring injury, I’ll take Nuguse every day of the week and twice on Sundays!!

It’s no fun to anoint a chosen one after he’s won everything! A bunch of posts back I quoted Jon Landau after he saw Bruce Springsteen for the first time in a tiny venue in Boston BEFORE Bruce was anybody. That’s the point. Don’t be shy, tell me who you think is more talented than Nuguse (other than Jakob).

A new Ethiopian, Kenyan, maybe Algerian (they had two good guys in 800m last year) - there's so much talent out there we don't know their names yet. Now Yared needs to get stronger to go through 3 rounds at a championship. Glad he's going to Spain - travel and racing practice is important too.

I was at the meet as I was an alternate in the 60+ relay. What does Nike hope to accomplish by making all the girls in the HS mile and all the boys in the HS mile wear identical orange singlets?
It’s just a little early. There is an Ethiopian Ermias Girma to keep tabs on. He ran 1:44.36/3:36 last year at age 18. Know what you’re thinking but he doesn’t look 22 or anything. Looks like a Diribe Welteji type talent who will run great at 800-1500. The Kenyan teenager Raynold Cheruiyot is a monster talent, too. I’ll never count out Hocker based on the fact that as an NCAA guy he was better than Mario, Olli, Kerr and Yared by a nice bit. I do buy that Yared was a part-time runner with his studies unlike the other bunch. It does feel unlikely that the ceilings of Hoare, Kerr, Tim, Katir and so on have much more to go up, so they need something to be off. Let’s also not forget Abel Kipsang like Katir might have more untapped potential.
Your depth of knowledge is far greater than mine and therefore your perspective much sharper, but the last two races by Yared have been astonishingly good. I have in my minds eye that all these races are going on and Jakob barely notices. He seems so confident, sure he’s better than the rest and can handle whatever they do. I think he’s going to watch these two Yared races and he’s going to notice. Hoare is an experienced and outstanding miler, who appeared to be very fit based on his recent xc runs, etc. Yared just demolished him. I mean really demolished him.
Yared is running the 1,500m in Madrid in two weeks. His mile converts to 3:30.5, with a ridiculous 25.9 last lap. He might get the WR in Madrid and possibly go sub 3:30. Jakob will surely notice if he loses a world record.

And just how doesn't that apply to your assertion that Nuguse is "the only" person who can challenge Jakob?

Well, I'm fully expecting Jakob to run 3:26-27 this year so I think he'll be untouchable during outdoors. So, if we're predicting who will be the silver medalist at Worlds, I think Nuguse has a really good shot but I'll also put money on Josh Kerr, a proven 3:29.05 guy and Olympic medalist who ran 3:48/3:32 indoors, 3:30 outdoors and finished fifth at Worlds... and that was considered a bad year. He looks motivated and appears to have rediscovered his kick, which was the best of anyone in the field over 300m in Tokyo.
I wouldn't sleep on Katir either, let's just remember he's run 3:28/7:27/12:50 and won bronze at Worlds. Kerr is 25 and Katir is 24, these guys are Nuguse's peers, and they're currently a lot more accomplished so maybe we shouldn't write them off.
I'll take my chances with Jakob the dictating prodigy who thought he was the best in the world at age 10.
You guys can have the recency. But at least this recency is far more legitimate than the laughable guy who was touted here two years ago, the guy who made sure to drop so far back in the Olympic final he never had his name called.
