This. I’m a female runner and unfortunately I avoid running on any trail or more deserted path when I’m by myself. Honestly 10-15 yrs ago, I didn’t even think twice about this but nowadays I have to be mindful of where I am running. I always stay on well lit roads or areas that are more populated, don’t run in the dark and do not wear head phones. It sucks that it has come to this, but I guess I would rather be safe than sorry.

zxccxv's post was in response to someone saying that Barquin's death is the ACLU/left's fault for closing institutions. zxccxv pointed out that in both the Tibbets case and this case, people just search for a way to politicize it and blame the left (Tibbets being for immigration reasons and Barquin for promoting personal freedoms over institutionalization reasons). He further said instead of pointing fingers he tries to think of intelligent ways to decrease violence in the country.

It may make you stronger, more competitive, and even more aggressive, but it certainly won’t speed up your reflexes or make a baseball bat whack feel like a pillow. I'm a golfer and often play solo late afternoon. Golf has declined in popularity and I love that I can zip around and play more holes before dusk. The course is often near empty. I never thought of this as a safety issue but now I can see how this type of situation is more possible than 10+ years ago.
I have to say I can't remember the last time I saw a female golfer playing alone.
Apparently this girl had used up her eligibility but had another year before graduation. That's why she was still on campus and practicing for second stage Q School next month instead of traveling to the fall tournament with the Cyclone team. Iowa State isn't exactly a golf powerhouse, nor the area a hotbed. Otherwise she might have had a teammate or other local practicing with her toward the Q School goal.
Just tragic all around but none of the preventive measures are ideal. Frankly I've always thought it was somewhat strange there aren't more murders in remote areas where people can be predicted to be alone. I've been in some desolate campgrounds off season with nobody else there.

It is very concerning how violence has become normalized in American society. Whether it be street gang disputes that quickly escalate into gunfire, petty theft where a gun is used, or the push back with unrestricted 2nd amendment rights and stand your ground laws. I feel many Americans do not realize there is a whole different world out there. Each day I go for a run in our local provincial park (Canada), parts of it are at least 2 miles from 'civilization' and yet each day I will see many women running alone. They run past me, not with fear and trepidation, but rather with a smile and a wave. I don't know what the solution is to America's violence problem is, but it is a problem many other countries in the West do not have.
1. The concept of women not running or being alone in general is not new. I’m a woman in my 50’s, and staying in groups while in sketchy situations (remote running trails, parking lots, etc.) was drilled into our heads starting in junior high. Self defense was part of our curriculum in gym class. Not running the same route everyday was recommended so a predator wouldn’t learn your routine. Serial killers in the 70’s, specifically Ted Bendy, helped spur a campaign of educating women on how to protect themselves. Women being attacked like this may seem like a newer phenomenon because of our 24-hour news cycle, but it’s not. Plus, in regards to female athletes, professional or amateur, out alone training on a golf course or a park trail, there are so many more of us now than there were 40 years ago. It was rare to see a woman jogging when I was growing up in the 70’s. It’s sick, but I guess there are more opportunities now to attack runners, etc.
2. I’m not sure a class on “leaving women alone” would have worked on this monster. I don’t think Education can overcome true evil.

True, but it would help out in the 99% of other cases that women have to deal with when they are harassed when out alone.

A women being harassed and a women being raped and murdered are two completely different things.
This is like me arguing that all drivers should take a driving etiquette course in response to a drunk driver killing someone. Sure the course won’t address this problem, but it would help in 99% of other cases of drivers being a jerk.
