Ryan Hill - doesn't have the strength (yet) to hang around near the end to unleash his impressive kick. Although his 7:34i should have indicated otherwise.
Jager - Endurance/strength from the steeple but just can't hang in the last lap. This happens repeatedly in races. Perhaps it's a lost cause.
Derrick - no kick but plenty of strength (strength == speed only if you have natural leg speed to begin with).
Lomong - doesn't time his kicks properly. This guy should be racing better than he is. He must be in la-la land thinking about his book deal or something during the race. Focus!
Centro - need more strength. This guy is going to be scary in the 5k if he focused on it.
Garrett Heath - need more strength. Quietly improving. An underdog worth watching for 2015/2016 as you would imagine by then he'd move to the 5k fulltime.
Andrew Bumbalough - no idea. Overtraining?

Good runner in WA state in his early HS years then moved to Minnesota and finished 4th at FLXC. Consistent top performer in college, but usually overshadowed. No runs for OTC and should be [is now] a legit 5k/10k guy.

I think Derrick has better speed than he gets credit for. The last few years he's pretty much equaled what Rupp did his first couple pro years. If he stays healthy the next couple years he'll be a sub-27 and sub-13 guy.
Don't lose track of how old Jager is because he went pro early. Pretty sure he's faster than Solinsky or Tegenkamp were at 25 and all three of them have been coached by the same guy this whole time. Even if you ignore the fact that he already has an AR and just talk 5k, he's still far from a lost cause.
Bumbalough has a nagging injury. He shouldn't be racing injured or not fit in my opinion. Can end up with something more serious.

2. Both run unexpectedly fast at Payton Jordan ( Chris sub 27, True 13:02)
3. Both 5k/10k guys that burst out at the wrong time.
Hopefully True's career season doesn't happen in 2014. But next year he will be 30, and you never know what time/injuries will do to you.
Don't forget about True's 6th place at the 2013 XC World Championships. Both are great runners, but True and Solinsky have very different strengths.

I used to say that about True as well, but with what kind of runner he has turned himself into the last 3+/- years I've abandoned that thinking. I do wish he'd jump in a Nordic race one of these years, a Super Tour event or US Nationals individual start race or something like that, just to see how he stacks up off of run training against the best skiers in the country. I suspect he would be competitive.
XC requires more upper body strength and extremely good technique to be efficient. I doubt he has the efficiency to be anywhere close to being good at XC skiing as he is at track, and XC skiing is a 'thinner' sport.

Chris Solinsky completely ignored a hamstring injury and made it 100x worse by training another 4 months on it. When it comes to running times, LOTS of athletes run their PR's in non-championship years.
No drug tests, maybe?

What's surprising about Jager is that when he was pretty new to the team and Teg or Solinsky was asked which of the guys had the most top end sprinting speed, they said, "it's the kid," meaning Jager. Yet, this is the one remaining element he needs to medal at international championships.
True's result was not surprising, because of the 6th at World XC, the convincing win over Derrick at Gate River(?), and his close loss to Gebremeskel at BAA 5k (Gebremeskel, answering a question, said that he thought True was in shape to break 13 right then).
Hassan Mead he ran for university of minnesota but had a collapsed lung I think in his 2nd or 3rd year that held him back for a while.

If you met him you'd see he's a super friendly guy - I can't imagine why you wouldn't think that. If he comes off in interviews as also being highly competitive and focused on the track, then good. He is. Anyone in his position has to be. Listen to his quote from the Flotrack interview. Something like: "Yeah, the Nike guys are good but I beat all of them today and I run fast when it counts." That's awesome. Why wouldn't you say that if you could?
Any real runner should love this guy. He is basically Quenton Cassidy training up in the wilderness, mostly by himself, with no coach, and on the weekends he likes to crush people from 5k to 10 miles.
Nothing better than some fresh EPO behind the bushes. Add some HGH and other roids. and by the weekend you are ready to come out of the wilderness and crush the competition. Amazing!
