Illinois State Meet Girl runs 16:02

Amazing! When I started this thread I figured it was newsworthy and exciting because of the total domination by one young lady in Illinois. Illinois has always been known for producing great runners and this girl took that to a whole new level in one race. I recall the same kind of "short course" discussion going on around Lukas V's historic runs until he continued that dominance on the national level too. Can we all just agree that Illinois running has a right to be proud of this?

They (the morons) can start their own thread about short courses if it is really bothering them that much. Obviously this thread was never intended to be about the course itself, it is about the history made on one course.

Remember when some random kid named Lukas Verzbikas ran a 13:54 5k on the same course for the state meet?

Oh wait, yeah...it wasn't a 5k.

I'll agree as well... The performances throughout each race were remarkable yesterday and with respect to the boys race(s), I'm not sure whether there has ever been talent that deep at the front of the pack (14:05, 14:14, 14:15, 14:15, 14:16, 14:17, 14:21, 14:22). All six races were great to watch .

Is anyone not from Illinois impressed? Or is this just an Illinois thing? She won a meet, and she should be congratulated, but let's not break her back here. The distance would never be ran in any championship/important race. EVER.

So if she ran for another 14.2 seconds, or whatever additional length of time you deemed appropriate, you would approve this performance? You're just another example of someone with his head too far up his ass.

Molly Seidel was a cross-country beast in the Midwest these past couple of years. She might have been capable of 16:02 at Detweiler last year, but probably not any faster. In high school cross-country, Detweiler is as legitmate of a course as any other renowned course.

Illinois is infamous for their horribly measured XC courses....

As if running 3 miles instead of a 5K isn't bad enough, they typically can't even get that right. 2.8-3.2 range is your typical Illinois XC course.

The record performance is very impressive and she will surely run very well on the track. The true issue with the course is the assumption that it is 10 feet wide. Having only seen the state meet once, I really can not comment on what is the typical set up for the state meet. The year I watched, the course was very wide throughout- maybe 50' in stretches.

The methodolgy assummed in the tracktalk question and answer link doesn't equate when the true width of the set up course is much wider. Thus making the course much shorter than what they suggest.

She might have ran a course and state record, but if you compare it to the 16'00 ran at Mt. Sac earlier this year (which is a hard course, not flat at all, on a warm day also) her performance was not as great as intended. Illinois should be happy their record was broken, it feels good to see the state getting faster.

The distance is short of 3 miles, and for those that say a state record was the amazing thing, what if 17'00 was the old record for another state and a girl ran 16'35. That would be a awesome state record, but nothing compared to the 16'02 in Illinois. That is where most negative poster come from.

Hence, the reason why all states should decide on a standard distance like 5k. Better in evaluating competition, but it is hard when you have traditions like that of Illinois.

And anything can happen in 200+ meters.

Anyone with any background knows that Illinois course is '3 miles', so that being 39 m short would be short of 3 miles (3x1609.344 = 4828), so would be 4789, and that is 211 short of 5000m. But it is short by 39m from the listed course length of 3 miles.

Anyone that wants to continue to insist that it is an error is either a troll or is too dense to bother with.

the course was remeasured in 2007.

So in one link the course was measured at an estimated 10' width, and in the most recent link they state they were estimating the course at a 20' width when making their mesurements. I see a the potential for error when making these assumptions. Can anyone verify how wide the course is when set up for the state meet? Is there an official person in charge of the course set up each year?
