Nah, I’d also put money on Bob Kennedy, Bernard Lagat, Frank Shorter, Pre to beat Fisher if we could transport their careers into the modern era.
Lol you can't be serious about Kennedy, Shorter, or Pre.
I think I have to go with 'nice try' on this. Pre's 5k PR is slower than Grant's 10k. He can literally go for twice the distance at that pace.
But I'm hoping someone can shed some light on his DL qualifying points. I haven't been able to see the chart, but didn't he have 6 or 7 points from just one race? I don't know if he was the local Wild Card that the organizers are allowed.
I have the same question about Hocker. How many points did he have? And was he the Wild Card?
C for tactics. Watching in the stadium, you can sense his hesitation to leave rail, try to make an inside pass. Needs to sharpen that up for these kind of time trials but also to be ready for kicks with the front group.
Agreed. Fisher is special and seems like a nice guy. Hopefully he has more good things to achieve in his career, but at this point I’d much rather have Rupp’s career.

Lol Pre was a fool tactically, and probably couldn't break 13:10. You're crazy to think Pre could be at any of these guys today. Frank Shorter? Come on.
If you actually believe this you need to be smoking crack. Or a Boomer with delusions of the good old days.
When Pre and Shorter were competing the world population was half what it is now and talent from Africa was only beginning to emerge. They were great athletes, but you can not argue that the depth and talent at the highest level of competition has not increased significantly since then.
I'd argue that if we transported Fisher into 1972 he would be a world beater. I love to see one of today's athletes time trial in 70's spikes just to extinguish the fantasies of you pathetic senior citizens.

Funny he disappears with an “injury” during worlds and usa’s but now is back it going faster than ever. Surely nothing nefarious going on.
Anyone catch his post-race interview with Lewis? When asked about taking a break, he actually said he's going to "down-cycle." Wrong choice of words, for sure.

It's adorable that you think I'm a boomer. Pre and Shorter were competitive at the world level and on the biggest stages. Pre was 4th at the Olympics and held just about every American Record there was in the distances among his contemporaries. Fisher is a great runner, and is putting together ARs at many distances, but he just isn't competitive on world stage when it counts yet. Also, it's not just about the shoe tech. It's about the development of training philosophies, recovery resources (think alter-g treadmills), and of course sponsorship opportunities that didn't exist in the 60's or even late 90's.
You really can't compare runners separated by decades based on times alone, that's just foolish. They need to be weighed against their contemporary challengers on a global scale. Do you really think that Cooper Teare who has run 10 seconds faster than Roger Bannister is a more accomplished runner? Of course not, you'd have to be a total moran to believe that. So far, Fisher hasn't delivered outside of these time trials and has yet to earn his spot among the legends of our sport. I hope he does one day.

7:25 is just off the charts good for a guy who was injured this summer and who had a 7:28 pr before this. I am happy to see him run so well. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Yared Nuguse has the indoor American record in the 3k from this winter and with his improvement from 3:47.38 indoors to 3:43.97 outdoors, you'd have to say that he would be running low 7:20s here fresh, just as Jakob would be breaking 7:20 fresh. Yared Nuguse won several DLs this year, beat Kerr, and came within 1/4 second of Jakob yesterday, so he is definitely a greater gold medal threat than Grant, who will always be a gentlemanly third at best until he comes to be and believe he is the equal of the top guys.
It was not paced to be lightning fast either. 54 last lap for Jakob, 53.7 for Kejelcha with 25.8 for the last 200. They both had a ton left and speed is the limiting factor for Barega/Grant/Aregawi/Bekele. All can’t hold sub 7:25 pace early like Yared and the top two today can.

Lol. Nujuice idiots. The nujuice can hold 7:25 pace and kick? You mean the guy that has run 7:28 mid?? You Nujuice fanboys are a crazy bunch.
0 World and Olympic medals. Surely there must have been better American distance runners out there
Unfortunately none with better times across 3000, 5000, & 10000. Not even close. One may say Fisher has gotten unlucky in the worlds and others lucky but the reality is that he's faster than any other American runner and faster than all but a few in the world historically.

I agree with you that times can not be compared across decades- Pre certainly would have been faster with the resources provided for today's athletes.
I just don't think you are giving Fisher enough credit. His performances at the world stage (6th, 4th, 9th, and 5th at worlds/olympics) are in the same realm as Pre's 4th. He was pretty much one bad step away from a medal.
The difference is that the global talent pool has expanded dramatically the past 50 years, running is a now a global sport where the best in the world have the means to train and compete. Winning a medal in 1896 is less impressive than in 2021 because the pool of talent was simply worse/smaller. The same could be said for 1972.
Remember when u were in high school and the morning announcements told you "The womens volleyball team beat Valley yesterday..." well Jim Ryun set the world record in the mile in high school. We pooped our collective pants when HS Webb missed the WR by 10 seconds.

Pre got 4th, Fisher got 5th at the Olympics. Not really much difference there.
Sidenote: Hopefully the biggest lesson Fisher learns and he doesn’t need to up the mileage any further. Sub in cross-training that obviously works for him if he wants to add the extra hour or so that he did before getting hurt. I’m not sure why he thought he had to up the ante over what Bekele/Cheptegei did mileage-wise but now it’s time to be smart.
