Well, ladies and gentlemen. Whatever drugs Bekele was on didn't interact well with his body today or it didn't do its job of preventing cramps. Next time.
It's a shame but this was the right decision for him. Anyone planning for him to run 2:03 in Berlin and then come back in under four months to run 2:02 was a fool--but even more the fool who wanted him to run that in almost 70 degree weather AND then come back and run London three months later and then maybe run World's in the marathon. Respect the marathon by taking proper rest between.

Did anyone else notice that Ethiopia cheering sections looked totally edited (like maybe even flown-in footage from a previous year?). At the beginning of the race when it was totally dark outside, it was already totally light out by the Ethiopia crew

The magic carbondrink didn't sit well in his stomach and didn't get digested as well. So the drugs in them were ineffective.
I can't decide now whether it was gutsy, for publicity, or plain stupid to make a blatant challenge to the WR in such crappy conditions. Leader seems to be handling somewhat well though, allegedly only +20 at 30k
