Rant - NYCM puts ~300 hobby joggers at the front of the race

If you're non-elite and you have a time goal, DO NOT run any of the big city megathons. They're just too crowded and have too much nonsense to run them seriously.

That includes charity runners from orange and green corral. 3 hour + runners mixed with 2:30-2:40 males. Buses running late, corrals too small for the amount of entries. The first mile is a wash and ruins your whole run.

A little advice for anyone thinking of running NYC. Do it once, expect a slow time, enjoy the course and atmosphere. Then never do it again.

+1. For all except the elites, NYC isn't a race; it's a parade. If you want to sign up for a parade, knock yourself out. But don't complain afterwards that it wasn't a race. You should have known beforehand what it was. Buyer beware.

Ran Chicago last year, New York this one. Chicago had none of these problems.

Pigs are the bottom feeders of society and NYC is no exception. Next time, treat the overweight, attention seeking jogger pigs the same as a lump of dog crap you encounter on a run.....move around it while holding your nose.

Half of the lowlife pigs that finished probably put it for disability on Monday morning.

Pretty funny the race starts right by toll booths. That says all you need to know about a cesspool like that. Millions of taxpayers and they still charge you to drive across a bridge.

They have 3 separate start areas but they put slow runners in front of fast runners. NYPD and NYFD should know better than anybody what a danger that is.

Even MLB went back to singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch. Time to put the twin towers to rest.

Amen brother!!!! I've been saying that since I ran NYC back in 1990. Just short of 24K finishers back then, so a lot smaller than today. I was never a real fast guy but was trying to race if I was putting a number on. Enjoyed running NYC, but my take then and sounds like it would be the same now is NYC is a good race to run once to see the spectacle, but there are a lot better choices for a fall marathon for someone who isn't a sub 2:20 guy who wants to run fast and be treated well. Even back then I felt like NYRR treated the elites well and the back of the packers well. As for the mid-pack competitive runner...we were cattle.

I agree. If you run CIM or Grandmas and you want to run sub3, there are so many to run with

If you go to some big city marathon, it's a shit fest

Come on guys. It took a minute or so to weave through the slower runners in front of me. Made no difference whatsoever to my time. It is an epic event and course, couldn't care less if other courses are slightly faster.

Those "heroic first responders" and their families are rewarded nicely with extremely generous, taxpayer-funded pensions and a lifetime of free medical benefits. This. I do think it's important for everyone to run, even hobby joggers, but that's the whole point of having corrals - it doesn't hurt anyone for slower runners to be behind faster runners, but it does hurt the faster runners' experience to have to dodge the slower ones.

I don't understand how it would somehow insult the heroism of our first responders to start in the corral with their own pace, or even start an hour earlier like the kids the NYRR invited. They knew that it would be an unfair, dangerous cluster to have faster runners dodging kids, and the kids got all the more attention because they weren't competing with adult runners. I feel like this would have been a better solution.

This is the reason so many faster runners are so hateful toward hobby joggers - hobby joggers want to have fun at a race, but faster runners do too, and they way they have fun is to challenge themselves and see what they can do. It ruins what they find fun about a race if they are in danger of running smack into someone who stops suddenly to take a selfie, or ruins their rhythm if people are running slowly five abreast in front of them and they can't get around. If there were complaints about this at like, some 5K Glo Run or Color Run, yeah, I'd say cry a river, you knew what it was when you married it, but this is one of the marathon majors. You don't hear pro footballers bitching about backyard Thanksgiving players, and it's because no one thinks it's an awesome idea to let those people go play on the field at the superbowl.

I've heard slower runners say "I paid just as much as they did to be here, I should get to be up front," and it's this horrible feedback loop of spite, where faster runners get upset and say shitty things about hobby joggers ruining their experience, and then hobby joggers get up front out of spite and ruin the experience for the faster runners on purpose.
