Rupp drops out

I hope he's ok. I did think he looked uncomfortable at a slow pace. Watch the replay of his cutdown miles after his 2 mile. He seemed much more at ease at 60 pace then today. Not sure if it was relavent to his drop out, but I did think he wasn't at his best today before he dropped.

Rupp did a freaking workout after the race.

He's fine.

How do you drop out of a race with 400m to go, then do a workout in a different pair of spikes?

Mental. If it isn't set up perfectly, he's done.

As much as I respect Rupp for his somewhat insane achievements, it does make me a little mad that he always bails if the conditions are not perfect. I wish somebody, specifically a legit competitor, would call him out and say "Hey dude, if you're really the best American 10k runner ever, you're a darn bad example to follow. Tough it out once in a while." I wish people would mess with him mid-race too, like purposely make him uncomfortable and ruin his perfect race so he either drops out or actually shows he's the best one out there. Make him run wide, box him in, throw a few elbows. He seems like an easy person to intimidate in an indoor one mile.

Of course though, I'm not an Olympic calibre distance runner so it's not gonna be me doing the intimidating.

Silver medal is in the Rupp-past. DNF is the Rupp-now. Past exploits are complete meaningless. Rupp appears to be a race-quitter.

This Race means Sh!t to Rupp, He's going for world's indoor. He ran 1200 good workout and quits 'cause the goal is to win a medal at Worlds. I bet you will be at worlds, oh wait no you won't, you will be home watching and hating. I've seen this a lot, where athletes drop when it doesn't go their way. They feel like they didn't lose if they quit. It is a sign of weakness and why he has silver and not gold and probably will never medal again.

I agree with this poster. Some team tactics, rough him up and see if he can hang.

Rupp is a championship racer, this is not a championship race. He probably didn't feel like sprinting at the end and cause an injury. The guy is human, not a machine and he just broke two American Records. Smart move if he felt more damage would be done by finishing. Sorry he disappointed you.

What on earth are you talking about? He almost never, ever bails. He races as much or more than any other American distance runner. And he's been in plenty of physical races.

There is just one problem with that statement. Rupp doesn't do that when it counts.

Injured runners do not workout after a DNF race. Runners who are not really injured can do post-race workouts.

The sad truth is that the majority of you on this forum have horrible style. That generality might seem harsh, but i'm sticking to it-the majority of you probably share Charlie's sentiment and dress just like him. ;(

You sit here and take shots at Rupp for wearing a Nike Sportswear Destroyer Jacket and retro Jordan X's and lament that he needs to grow up and dress like an adult. I'm sorry, would you prefer Docker Chinos, Columbia Titanium jacket and Mizuno Wave Riders??? I'm happy you appointed yourself Lets Run's Chief Arbiter of Cool but your designation really should be revoked.

I find it particular refreshing that Rupp doesn't dress like 99% of distance runners off the track. That he can rock Jordans to a press conference proves that he has a life outside of running. He probably listens to hip-hop, stays up on youth culture, and frequents sites like hypebeast and high snobiety.

Lagat is the greatest US runner EVER. Pre did not choke. He went for the win and failed. He wasn't settling for anything other than 1st.

Rupp's DNF is in the record books. It cannot be erased, no matter how hard Rupp's fans try.
