As a larger strength runner, I have the exact opposite view of this
OK, I just watched the race. Has the OP spent his whole life indoors? Where was the mud?
Seriously, a muddy wasteland is what they usually get for the High School Nationals in Portland.
So, the conditions don't favor NAU men??
I was in Ames in 2000. 19 below zero windchill factor. Southern schools suffered. Arkansas men loved it. The Princeton male champion said "This is cross country". If you want sunny and 70 degrees, go to a track meet in California. I tend to agree.

What's with all this BS that CU can't duplicate a fast pace in Boulder? Do you think they can't run 60 400's on the track if they want fast? I lived there for 10 years, you can run fast if you want, just have to go a little shorter. But, simulating a fast pace for an xc race is easy.
It was muddy in places but not bad overall.
I wasn't by the start but that seems to be the only place runners fell
Ches coming back was a huge surprise
Still don't understand why a favorite wants to lead from the beginning. Ches ran a smart race.

Paraphrasing Wetmore's words many times over: "Due to altitude, we can't run repeats at 4:20, so we always worry about staying close enough early in a race so that we can use our strength late."
