I was in Ritz's corner tonight. A solid performance by him.
As much as I hate Rupp sitting and kicking he showed sound racing tactics.
Championship races are won by "kickers". Rarely do we see someone lead and hold off the field to the wire, unless they are just head and shoulder above the competition.
To a professional, running a race that will yield the best results is "manly." Winning is manly. Everyone in the field today would agree.
There are no prizes for running a race that impresses foolish teenaged letsrun.com frequenters who have had the Prefontaine bologna shoved down their throats. There are only prizes of gold, silver, and bronze. A professional runs the race in a manner that will give him the best chances of getting one of these medals. Rupp, Ritz, and almost everyone in the field ran their races in such a way that gave them their best odds. All of these individuals were equally "manly." Rupp won becaue he is better.

You can look at Webb and see that it has taken all the time up to the last 2 weeks for ANY Africans (all 2 of them) run faster than Alan did 2 years ago, and you can say if Webb can just get back to where he was 2 years ago....
But at 10000 its not even close.

No one gives a crap if Rupp wins a race in 27:52. That'd be like if Bekele hung out in a bunch of races and ran 27:10's all season. It's like Usain Bolt going out and running 10.00 all season. Completely stupid.

No. She goes out and breaks college records. When she races, she actually races honestly. Every time. Not to mention she placed better than Rupp in Beijing and will continue to place better than Rupp for their careers. What makes Rupp too good to run the way normal people do? Did you take into account, that oh, Rupp's heals and knees were low until the last 600?
He was running an easy pace run.
He still has almost 2 more months to go in his season.
He played it smart.

The 100m and the 10k are not even close to analogous. Do not try to compare them, it does not help your argument. Comparing Barringer in the 3k Steeple at NCAAs and Rupp in the USAs at 10k is a lot more compareable, but still not adequate. (1) They are still very different events; (2) Rupp is not even close to as much of a favorite as Barringer was at NCAAs (Rupp was a slight favorite, and he needed to do everything in his power to win; that he did); (3) the 10k is a lot more volatile or hit-or-miss (look at Abdi today).
Different situations call for different tactics. Today, he had better speed than his competitors, so he ran a strategy that allowed him to utilize his speed to win.
When he's in a European field, he'll be smart enough to know he's going for 8th or 10th. If the race goes out slow, he'll conserve energy with the pack until it breaks up, and then fight his best to go for his target finish. If it starts out fast, he'll run the steady pace to get 8th or 10th.
to be honest I think Rupp would lose in a 10K race to Lagat...

Dude, Nelson and Ritz have PR's just seconds off Rupps and they were both on tonight. Rupp did what his coach advised and all he needed to. Did these other guys have triples at conference, regionals and ncaas all in the last 6 weeks? Get over the hate man. His goal was a win, and laying the all out effort in Berlin.
