In my opinion, Cheruiyot won. Jakobs' head fell across the line first, but Cheruiyot got his full body across the line before Jakob. The lower half of Jakobs' legs were not across the line before Cheruiyot was completely across. Why is it like this in track and field? Is it the first to "touch" the line who wins? Why is it in other sports the ball must completely cross the line before a point is scored? I think this is something that needs serious consideration. And if you would like to see for yourself, skip to 6:41 and play in 0.25x speed. Tell me what you think.

I've seen the entire video. And does every track race replicate this scenario? No, the winner is typically the first across the line entirely. I am questioning the legitimacy of victory being given to someone who has not yet fully cross the line, over a competitor who has fully crossed the line. Seems illogical to me. I understand the standard and why it is in place, but there is a genuine fallacy in that logic.

All that matters is that they are applying the rule consistently. First torso to hit the line wins you the race, the end.

I have had the same thoughts when other races have been decided on a dive like this, but thems the breaks I guess. We have to pick some criteria that the photo finish can see. Maybe hips or bellybutton could work instead of what they do now.
Yes, Cheruiyot completed this distance faster with his whole body. OTOH, we don't judge swimming by the first person to get their whole body out of the pool. Diving isn't easy to do effectively, so it's rarely done on purpose.

It shows desperation, not authority. Not the most glorious way to get to the top of the dais. It would be fitting if he dived off it.

Watching the race it looked to me like Tim C was pretty clearly the winner.
The photo finish shows it was Jakob.

There’s no genuine fallacy. The runners start from entirely behind the start line, so requiring the entirety of their body to cross the finish line is forcing them to run well in excess of the designated race distance. Requiring them to touch the finish line in a manner that ensures at least 100m have been covered is good and the torso does a good job of it unlike limbs that can be stretched out to cheat. Jakob’s center of gravity still covered 100m.

i dont want the rule to change but you do have a point. The start is toes behind the start line, but you can have your torso over the start line. so your torso is not doing the 1500m but your toes definitely are. ;-)
