The 2016 Ostrava Golden Spike meet is in the books and it saw Usain Bolt extend his win streak to 19 by taking the 100 in 9.98 seconds and a couple of breakout performances by young Europeans in the 1500. We recap the main events briefly below with results (Full Results here: Ostrava Full Results).

Men’s 100: Usain Bolt Wins Easily
Usain Bolt is two for two in 2016 — and 19 for his last 19 dating back to 2013 — after winning the 100 meters in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Friday in 9.98 seconds into a slight headwind. The time marks a .07 improvement on Bolt’s season opener in the Cayman Islands last Saturday and ties him for seventh on the 2016 world list (Qatar’s Femi Ogunode is the world leader at 9.91).

9.98 for Bolt 9.98 for Bolt

Bolt, who visited doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt in Germany prior to the meet to receive treatment on his hamstring, looked better tonight than he did last weekend, getting a decent start and running unchallenged over the final 50 meters. However Bolt, who was hoping for a time in the 9.80’s if everything went according to plan, did not appear happy when he saw his time pop up on the scoreboard.

Quick Take: Business as usual for Usain Bolt, though he wasn’t pleased
Like his win in the Cayman Islands, this was a fairly ho-hum performance from Bolt. He hasn’t raced any of the big dogs in the 100 this year and likely won’t until the June, where he’s scheduled to face Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell in Kingston on June 11. And even then, we may not learn much — recall that four years ago, he lost to Blake in the 100 and 200 at the Jamaican trials only to win gold in both events in London.

“My first 40 meters, maybe 50 meters, was kind of sluggish,” Bolt said to the media after the race. “That’s always needed to get up to speed quickly, so I thought that’s why I run so slow….We have a lot of work to do. I have a couple of months to do it, so I’ll be fine. … I need more races. The more I run, the faster I’ll get.”

The transitive property proves that Bolt has “a lot of work to do.” As we pointed out on the messageboard, Bolt beat runner-up Ramon Gittens by .23. In Shanghai, Gatlin beat Gitens by .30.

Men’s 1500: Czech Filip Sasinek Gets Big PR, but No One Gets Olympic Standard
The Czech Republic’s World Indoor runner-up Jakub Holusa tried to put on a show for the home fans and was the only one to go with the rabbits through 800 in 1:54. But he couldn’t sustain the hot pace and with 350 to go he was passed by Germany’s Timo Benitz and France’s Bryan Cantero. By the final turn, Brit Chris O’Hare and 20-year-old Czech Filip Sasinek had joined them. Benitz held a slight lead on Sasinek, Cantero and O’Hare, who were three-wide behind him at the top of the home straight. Cantero began to fade as O’Hare and Sasinek began to reel in Benitz; those three men battled to the line but in the end it was Sasinek who was able to come through with the win in 3:36. O’Hare and Holusa (who faded to seventh at the finish) may have missed out on the Olympic standard, but both have it from last summer anyway.

Quick Take #1: A massive breakthrough race from Filip Sasinek
Many expected a Czech runner to take this race, but it was Sasinek, not Holusa, who was celebrating when it was done. He’s made a massive leap forward in 2016, though Sasinek will be a bit disappointed to come so close to the Olympic standard (3:36.20) only to miss out by .12.

Sasinek entered the year with a PB of 3:43.83 but got down to 3:41.37 indoors and won the Czech indoor title in February (Holusa was not in that race). He carried that form over outdoors, PR’ing by over five seconds tonight to get down to 3:36.32.

Next stop, Rio? Next stop, Rio?

Women’s 1500: 19-Year-Old Konstanze Klosterhalfen Gets the Olympic Standard
19-year-old German Konstanze Klosterhalfen ran with a confidence well beyond her years, attacking the race from the front, and she didn’t back off when she found herself in the lead once the final rabbit dropped out at the 1k mark. Klosterhalfen had a lead of around three seconds at that point but would need to keep pushing if she wanted to get the Olympic standard of 4:07.00 (no other German has it).

She did just that, and though she began to tie up toward the end of the race, she held off Slovakia’s Lucia Hrivnak for a 1.47-second PR of 4:06.91 to grab the standard.

Men’s 400
21-year-old Jamaican Javon Francis looked very impressive, taking the victory in 44.87 over the U.S.’s Tony McQuay and World Indoor champ Pavel Maslak of the Czech Republic. Francis has now run in the 44’s in each of his last three races.

2004 Olympic champ Jeremy Wariner struggled yet again as for the second straight race as the Jimmy John’s owner only managed a 46.21

The final women’s track event didn’t disappoint. Two-time defending world champ Zuzana Hejnova was expected to take the win in front of the home crowd, but she wound up in a three-way fight for the victory against Poland’s Joanna Linkiewicz and Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer. In the end, it was the least-credentialed of them, Linkiewicz, who came through for the win in a PB of 55.40.

Women’s Pole Vault
There was a scary moment for U.S. World Indoor silver medallist Sandi Morris, who broke a pole and landed awkward during the pole vault tonight, forcing her to withdraw. Morris is scheduled to compete in the Diamond League meet in Rabat on Sunday and her status for that is up in the air, but she said on Twitter that she’s feeling okay. The Czech Republic’s Jirina Ptacnikova got the upset, taking down world champ Yarisley Silva of Cuba in front of the home fans.
