Hello all, hoping for some advice here.
I recently returned to running and in need of some direction.
Long story short...
Tore my achilles in May of 2016, was not really running for a few years before that and did not run at all until December 2016. Was cycling around 80-120 miles a week (7 days a week) from July to May 2017
Began running 3-4 days a week (10-15 miles) in May of 2017, usually just a 5K 2-3 times with a long run of 5 miles.
Continued the 10-15 miles, got back into racing in the fall and into December.
Started some training plans in the spring that took me to 25 miles a week and backed off over the summer to about 20.
Started a half marathon training plan September 9th for a half that was on November 10th, final 2 months of a 4 month plan. This plan had me averaging around 36 miles a week with long runs once a week anywhere from 10-13 miles at a pace of 6:52 to 7:02.
I ran two 10k races during this plan(October 14th-38:17, October 28th-37:57) and they felt pretty easy.
Ran my half yesterday and was not too pleased with it, granted it was 25 degrees with 22 mph winds gusting to 30 with 5 miles of the course into the wind in the country where I was alone and then 3 decent 40-60 ft hills at miles 10, 11 and 12. Finished in 1:34 while shooting for a 1:29.
My pacing partner finished in 1:29 (her PR is 1:26.18)and I easily beat her in both the 10k races by 90 seconds.
I guess my question is, can I really expect to compete at these longer distances with as few miles as i've put in?
I am at 970 for the year while she is at 1980 and this is the only thing I can think of as to why I struggle at anything over a 10K.
My running has been pretty unstructured until recently when I started doing McMillian plans.
Thoughts? Comments?
