If 'Oumuamua were in fact a comet, why then did it not experience outgassing when it was closest to our sun? In addition, they cite other research that showed that if outgassing were responsible for the acceleration, it would have also caused a rapid evolution in 'Oumuamua's spin (which was not observed).

"We explain the excess acceleration of `Oumuamua away from the sun as the result of the force that the sunlight exerts on its surface. For this force to explain measured excess acceleration, the object needs to be extremely thin, of order a fraction of a millimeter in thickness but tens of meters in size. This makes the object lightweight for its surface area and allows it to act as a light-sail. Its origin could be either natural (in the interstellar medium or proto-planetary disks) or artificial (as a probe sent for a reconnaissance mission into the inner region of the solar system)."

There's also the fact that 'Oumuamua's orbit brought it to within 0.25 AU of the sun, which is a good orbit for intercepting Earth without experiencing too much solar irradiation. In addition, it came to within 0.15 AU of Earth, which could have been the result of orbital corrections designed to facilitate a flyby.

The fact that the Pan STARRS-1 survey barely detected 'Oumuamua at its closest approach could be seen as an indication that there are many other such objects that were not detected, bolstering the case for 'Oumuamua being one of many such probes. Astronomers recently concluded that our solar system has likely captured thousands of interstellar objects like 'Oumuamua, this opens the possibility for future detections which could help prove (or disprove) the case for an interstellar light sail.

Pretty high, considering those minorities are still, by definition, that - a minority in the field.

First of all if it were a "solar sail," it would never have gotten here. The correct term is "stellar sail."

Now if some aliens were really able to send a stellar-sail craft over here, capable of steering itself, presumably that steering would best be done when near a star; interstellar space wouldn't have the energy necessary for major course corrections. So the question is, did it leave the solar system in roughly the same direction it arrived from? If not, was it going in the general direction of any other nearby star that it might reach anytime soon?

Next, why radio silence? The object was not going anywhere near light speed, so wouldn't it make sense for it to report back? Better yet arrange for it to be captured into a permanent solar orbit so it can make a detailed study. This way, they're going to be waiting decades, at least, to retrieve a photo of a small blue dot.

Then again, if high tech Earth scientists can be stupid, high tech aliens probably can too.

So, in other words, it is actually a flyer(pun intended) for a sale by aliens.

You can very clearly see the cockpit near the front in that photo.

FTR - I don't think this is anything other than an asteroid that defies easy classification and that we will find many more of these type of objects as we get better at observational astronomy and remote sensing.

However, do you really think an advanced civilization who managed to create an advanced probe that visits other solar systems couldn't come up with something that would look 'radio-dark' to us? Perhaps they are exploiting quantum-nonlocality to communicate, or gravity waves, or something we can't envision yet.

Well it appeared to slow down as it got near the Earth, as you would imagine a probe would do, especially if it had been travelling at near light speed across the cosmos.

I remember reading at the time some astronomers saying that, although it might seem obvious that as our detection capabilities improve as regards objects like this, we were bound to come across inter-stellar asteroids if they exist sometime soon, the odds of the first one being detected travelling so close to Earth and such an odd shape would be huge.

I hope it was a reconnaissance probe and they will be back to save humanity (rather than wipe us out or something). If they share their secrets with us it would probably be like fast forwarding a million years into the future in our lifetimes (and I guess they will have figured out the secret of virtual immortality as well). Don't know about the lack of transmissions. I guess one could hope that an advanced civilization would be using tech way beyond radio that we can't even imagine now.
