I was wearing American flag shorts (not split shorts). It was heavy rain and it was 5 PM. I went into the store and one of the clerks said:
"Nice shorts. If you're wearing them in this store, you have to sing the national anthem. Go ahead, I'm waiting."
Immediately, I froze in place. I know about a third of the lyrics. One of the customers also stared at me. I was standing still, frozen, and muttered: "I'm okay..."
And then he said: "Okay then."
I think maybe I kind of understand it - hostility to Mexicans and Spanish people. However, I'm not Spanish or Mexican - I just got really tan during the summer. That Home Depot employee, an old guy with glasses, was correct though in assuming that I didn't know the National Anthem. But it was his hostility towards me that shocked me the most.
The moral of the story? - Don't wear American patriotism gear if you're not absolutely hardcore about it.
I don't come from a family with a military background. But I appreciate the freedom to wear and do whatever you want compared to other cultures.
Was I right in wearing American flag shorts to Home Depot? Or is there a level of patriotism I need to achieve in order to wear it? (I've hugged veterans and attended marches).
