I've always been prone to developing a nasty side stitch about 1.5 miles into a race. Once it starts it is really hard to breath due to the severe stabbing pain under my run/upper ab. Most of the time I cope with the pain, which worsens as I continue, and maintain my pace until the end of the race, but I have a tough time picking up the pace in the last 1k-800 to really finish the race the way I want. I feel like it's holding me back, from going to the next teir of runners in my state, since they usually pick up the pace around then and I just can't go with them because of the side stitches.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with what helps prevents these, and what I can do to get ride of one mid race. They seem to happen more when it's hot out, and less when it's cold (not sure if that makes a difference).
I hydrate properly in the week leading to my races, I don't eat a ton before my race/the day off. From what I've read online, it seems like to might be breathing, to little of a warm up, or weak core? I don't know, I was just wondering if anyone had some advice when it come to these. All input is appreciated!
