I can think of running from the cops at a big house party in college/high school.
Obviously most other sports, speed and endurance help.

One time rhisnreally beautiful girl and I were walking through the jungle. After we got about 5 miles away from civilization, she got bitten by a poisonous snake. I am very familiar with this type of snake and know that it kills within 55 minutes unless anti venom is administered. I gave her one big kiss for adrenaline and said, “Don’t worry babe, I’ll see you in 54 minutes.” Then I ran 5 miles back to civilization, spent 2 minutes tracking down the anti venom, and ran 5 miles back. I made it 1 minute before she died. Then, we made love right there on the jungle floor.
Once while driving on an interstate highway I ran out of gas about two miles away from an exit. I ran to the gas station and back to the car with their courtesy gas can and barely lost a half hour.

Why'd you tempo it instead of really run if it was so important?

Obviously he knew the girl wouldn't allow any action while she was still alive.
Didn't have a vehicle one day, got dropped off at work and then had no ride home so I ran. A bike or bus ticket would have accomplished the same though so probably never. Rec league sports would bet he closest thing.

Yep, running from the cops on too many occasions during my jr high and early high school years. Running from drug dealers I owed money to. Running after drug deals gone bad. Lots of things where running came in useful and I wasn't even a "runner" yet. This is how I found out I could run!
My running background came in handy when I was a Fulbright scholar for a semester in Russia. I was in a provincial city that was closed to foreigners during the Soviet period. Even in 2010 (when I was there), there was very little information in English and very few foreigners. As far as I could find out, there weren't any bus or tram maps in any language. I was training pretty seriously for marathons at the time, so I would run out to a place we wanted to go to, make a note of which buses went there, then take my wife and kids there later. Sometimes this was just sightseeing, but we also figured out how to get to the only western-style supermarket in town this way.
Walking at the mall, amusement parks and walking to places.
Lots of time my endurance has been a real asset including at work, playing other sports, pushing through crowds at concerts, doing yard work etc.
Major League Soccer.
Let’s see how much endurance these guys have compared to people with a Track background. (I trained for marathons too).
“Oh, but soccer isn’t about running! It’s about lateral movement and changing pace!”
That’s where Fartleks, Hill running, and Trail running help.
?
1 v 1 me!
In soccer, I’ll cling to you like a starfish, and be as slippery as a squid.
Last time I was at the head of the line at Costco and noticed a broken egg in the carton I was going to buy. I ran back to the dairy section and got a new carton, dodging carts and strollers the whole way, and got back to the cashier before she finished ringing me up.

Out ran the shot-gun blast from the father of my 17-year old girl friend. Her folks came home earlier than expected and I had time only to grab my shoes and pants and hurdle the front gate.
In College running late to class. There were multiple times I had 5 minutes to literally run across campus (roughly 1 mile). Once was even to a final exam.

Prepared for heat spells. 110 degrees seems OK now.
College party. There was this other a-hole there, not just me. I bet I could run to the store, grab garlic powder or something, and run back faster than he could drive there. We were both right all the time, of course, so I hopped off the couch and darted out the door. Got back with garlic maybe 10 seconds before he did. Yeah, I'm proud.
I was working at a running store shortly after the Air Stab came out and this kid came in an tried a pair on and suddenly bolted out the door. In a reflex I took off after him. He went flew down the block and cut hard around the corner. He turned to see if he was clear and he just about screamed when he saw that I was right next to him. I grabbed him by the collar and he kicked the shoes off and took off across the street. I picked up the shoes and walked back to the store. I realized that was a stupid thing to do as he could have easily pulled a knife on me and hurt me pretty badly. I ran a 1:50 800 about three weeks later.
