Let's say if I need to break 32 in the 10k, I need to be able to run at least 2minutes flat in the 800m.
With heavy weights + lots of sprinting and speedwork, my top speed will be faster and by the time I can run a sub12 secs 100m/ 50secs in the 400m,
I will just build endurance later on during the training cycle with the main focus on being able to sustain at fast speed longer.
Thoughts?
From what I've read, Lydiard uses the pyramid example and says the bigger base you have (endurance aerobic work), adding anaerobic work later on top will get you a taller pyramid = better performance. It got me thinking though, if I have the speed first and then when I am working on my endurance I can hit a faster pace and then when I got accustomed to the training I can add in more speed???? I know this is an entirely different example, but lets say biceps curls, instead of curling a lot of light weight reps , doing heavy heavy 1 max rep will get my muscle strength improved quickly and when I can curl heavy surely I can curl a lot of reps with slightly lighter weight..?
Not sure if that makes sense, I need you experts to explain why fundamental aerobic work should come before speedwork
Please and thank you
