USF had men pacing women's 10k runners to qualifying marks?

ARTICLE 4. On the report of an official, or from a properly filed protest, the

referee shall warn or disqualify a competitor who gives or receives assistance,

a competitor who is determined to have been directly or unduly aided by a

coach, a teammate not in the event, or a non-competitor associated with the

competitor’s team, or a competitor who is indirectly aided from inside the

competition area by a coach, a teammate not in the event, or a noncompetitor

associated with the competitor’s team.

a. For the purpose of this rule, the following shall be considered assistance, and

therefore not allowed:

RULE 4 / THE MEET 63

1) Viewing a video or photos, or a competitor using any wireless

communication device during event competition.

2) Using any device or technology that provides the user with an unfair

advantage over another athlete.

3) Using any appliance that has the effect of increasing the dimension of

a piece of equipment beyond the permitted maximum in these rules,

or that provides the user with an advantage that would not have been

obtained using the equipment specified in the rules.

4) Pacing in races by persons not participating in the same race, by lapped

competitors or those about to be lapped, by competitors of the opposite

gender in the same race, or pacesetting by any kind of technical device

that benefits the field.

5) Individual markers in the form of tape or other material used for any

running event except as specifically authorized.

Ok, so its pretty clear this shouldn't count. But can these runners count this effort as their pr?

I guess they were racing not pacing.

I think it was discussed in another thread that it's okay in 10000m races? Seems kind of wack though.

It is okay for genders to compete together but not for two men to pace two women and then drop out. If another coach protested this result, they would be removed from the list.

it clearly states pacing by opposite gender competitors in the same race isn't allowed. So it wouldn't matter if the men really were racing and didn't intend to help the women's runenrs at all. If I were a coach that had runners on the bubble, I'd protest this.

Actually, pacing is allowed by the opposite gender in mixed events, the resultant times do not count for qualifying. BUT there's also an exception to this rule in........ you guessed it, the 10k!

Is there a way for a coach who wasn't even at the meet to protest results long after the protest period has ended.?

Where is this published. I just looked at the NCAA rulebook and the NCAA Qualifying Criteria and found nothing that indicates this is legal.

Any coach can protest this result but it can't be too late. If somebody contacted the NCAA and protested now it would be fine but if they wait until after conference time it will probably be too late.

Maybe the "males" in the race identified as female. Don't get so hung up on labels, It's 2018 man.

Guys: Quit getting bowed up about something that is meaningless. The NCAA rules allow for a mixed gender 10,000 meters and there is no way for any official to "determine" pacing. Who is to say these guys weren't running all out? This rule has been in place for well over 30 years and it will stay in place. Focus more on the important things, like men's track programs being slashed because of football overspending.

That exception only exists because 10K is the only race that is mixed. I guess the coach found a loophole.

Seriously what is up with all the butthurt hall monitors on this site? So they got paced by some dudes--they still ran a great time! They ran all 10,000 meters in the time required to qualify. So what if some of the guys paced them? Almost every great time is paced by somebody. How many of you ran your fastest times while being dragged along by someone faster? I bet all of you! All the WRs are paced.

Maybe they got a tiny advantage by having male pacers. Perhaps a minor rule was broken. So what? They ran 10k in the qualifying time. The only women this might hurt are women who get bumped out of a championship meet WHO DID NOT RUN THE QUALIFYING TIME. There won't be any male pacers at championship meets.

I don't understand this hardcore "rules are rules" attitude. You see it rear it's head every time a team gets DQ'd for something like mismatched uniforms. In my mind, the spirit of the rules matters much more. They ran the time. They didn't have springs in their shoes or undropped testes, or someone miscounted a lap. They ran a race start to finish as hard as they could and now they get to run another one. In my mind, all this legalism takes away from what makes this sport great which is people testing their limits in a very straightforward and simple pursuit.

There is no qualifying time for the NCAA first round, you moron. The top 48 declared runners by time are in the meet. Therefore, these illegally-paced efforts DO potentially keep other worthy runners out of the meet.

So you mentioned they had a small advantage. What if I gave you a blood dope serum that only gave you a small advantage. Or what if I gave you a 5 second head start for a small advantage. What if I brought in pros to pace you to a PR as a small advantage. I mean, you still ran the same distance!!
