Rowbury goes home devastated
Daniels calculator put its at 4 flat, 14:55. Hansons says 4:23 mile, 14:47 5k. In her first race of the season! I hope she gets more of Shannon's records this season.
Both say 8:35 3k so Slaney's record might be out of reach for Doha.
Great stuff. 63.11 last lap. Won by 15 + seconds. The
The old outdoor record was 9:20.25 set by Simpson’s rival Shannon Rowbury in 2014. Simpson already owned the American indoor record in this event (9:18.35).
(Drug cheat Regina Jacobs ran 9:11.97 in 1999 but that came in a mixed race so it is not record-eligible).
Splits/results:
There is no official American record for the 2 mile run. It is not recognized as a national record event.
Congratulations Jenny Simpson!!! Another victory for clean sport.
wow, big negative split. 4:44-4:32! with the quick close. go Jenny.

So now there is Killjoy.
Only 6 seconds per 400m off.
Hmmm ... wonder what the clean 3K record is?

Guess she also set American records for 1. 97 and 1.98 miles, then.
Drake Stadium is the most Storied athletics venue in the Western Hemisphere next to the L.A. Coliseum.

Letsrun recognizes it therefore it's recognized.
It's a good time against a weak record. This race does not indicate she can take the 1500 , mile, 3k or 5k record this year, or ever. Her best chance would be in a Diamond League 5k this summer. The 5k is the weakest AR of the four.

It certainly indicates she is close to chasing the 5k record. with splits of 4:44/4:32 she's almost certainly capable of 9:10-9:12 with more competition.
And keep in mind it's just April and she has just started her season. Breaking an AR in a season opener is pretty dang hard to do. I hope she goes for the 5k record.

She was 4:44.91 at 1618.69 meters. So her splits were more like 4:43.3, 4:33.4. Still superb. She could have run 9:12 in an evenly paced race.

The one I want to see is the 3k. She's running against the big guns in Doha next Friday. Will drug cheat Mary Slaney's US record of 8:25.83 which has stood since September 7, 1985 finally go down? Simpson is #2 on the US all-time list at 8:29.58 (2014). Her 9:16 is only worth 8:35.6.
Here is a nice article from the Des Moines Register on Simpson's 2-mile win. Simpson who was born in Iowa and has never lost at Drake. She's a perfect 11 for 11.

She was pushing the pacer for the mile who then got out of the way and she took off. She looks like someone who is going to run her best 5k in a similar race. It was a high key race but she didn’t have to race anyone, just the clock. She looked much better when she was setting her own pace.

there have been championship races over 2 miles in the US since as far back as 1916 when Joseph Ray won the AAU National indoor 2 mile championship in New York in 9:25.8. he won it again in 1923 (9:10.4) and 1924 (9:32.2).
the great Finnish distance runner Paavo Nurmi won the AAU indoor 2 mile championship in 1925 running 9:09.6 in Louisville, Kentucky.
in the 1950's the IC4A held indoor championships over 2 miles with the 1952 edition being won by Fred Wilt 8:50.7, from Horace Ashenfelter (8:51.4) and Curtis Stone (8:54.7).
in the 1960's, USTFF held indoor championships over 2 miles. John Miecznikowski (POL) won the 1963 championship in Milwaukee in 8:59.7 and none other than Jim Ryun won a NCAA indoor championship in Detroit in March 1968 outsprinting Gerry Lindgren 8:39.0 to 8:40.8.
plus of course the famous Millrose Games and the Knights of Columbus Games regularly featured 2 miles races as did the Coliseum Relays. Max Truex won the 2 miles at the Coliseum relays in 1959 running 8:49.5.
so, technically, you might be right. there might not be an officially sanctioned AR for 2 miles, but it is a well-established event with a long and illustrious history of racing by some of your nation's foremost exponents of the art. maybe you should write to the authorities and tell them it's about time they did recognise a record in the event.
I don't keep women's records, but the best time I know of by an American male would be:
8:07.07 Matthew Tegenkamp, Eugene, OR 10-Jun-2007
8:07.41i Galen Rupp, Boston, MA 25-Jan-2014
cheers.
She's faster than Jamin. Hey Jamin, are u going for a sub- 9:15 2 mile soon?
I think we have to think about a couple factors that might put her in closer contention to the record: 1) Without the wind and with an evenly paced race she could have run closer to 9:10 2) She will have competition pulling her along and others that can likely hit this time /be close 3) No one out performs expectations more than Jenny... My guess is she runs 8:24 in Doha if all conditions are right.... call me an optimist
