If there are any HS coaches willing to weigh in on this plan, I would be very grateful.
I'm helping my son build up from never having run more than 20 mpw in two short (10 week) middle school seasons to 35 mpw before 9th grade. Other than that he has never done much aerobic exercise of any kind, but he loves running now and seems to have some potential after a good 8th-grade racing season.
The basic structure is:
* two weeks of building followed by one light week, with a long run on Saturday building to 6 miles.
* all miles run at a comfortable pace, with hills common and fartlek mixed in a couple days/week
* occasional doubles starting in week 15 marked by slashes, just to shake out in the a.m.
* roughly 500 miles total
He's four weeks in now and feeling fresh.
