Kurt Cobain did everything he could to avoid interviews, and he was extremely marketable.
Cobain also wasn't a 5' 11" dildo with ears.
Since John Utah is 100 percent wrong about virtually everything he posts, the fact that he is almost killing himself to defend Rupp here is an indirect indicator of how crass Rupp's behavior toward he "media" is (and I use quotes for obvious reasons -- FloTrack? Letsrun? Really now).
If Rupp had a blanket policy of no interviews, that would be one thing. But when he runs well, he's happy to spend a few minutes giving a scripted speech for the cameras and thanking his coach and his sponsors and the good God above and whatever. That he demurs only on the few occasions that he lays an egg out there is a bad look.
Some of this is Rupp's inherently reticent personality, sure. But a great deal of it is that NOP runners are in effect put on a communications lockdown by Salazar when they sign on. This is not in dispute. Rowbury lost whatever personality she had when she joined. Rupp, Cain and Jenkins never had any in the first place. Salazar had been putting the kibosh on interviews with Rupp since his college days. They use Ken Goe as a their unofficial PR agency of one and that's pretty much it.
Yes, they've enjoyed loads of success. Perhaps they will all look back one day on the years they were little more than nonverbal hamsters on wheels and various borderline or outright illegal substances, and believe that it was worth it. I don't think most of them will see it that way, because they are more human than Salazar himself is.
