Here are the seeds for the AA state meet in IL. This is just super fast for a freshman. I looked up what Ritz ran his freshman year and he was around 9:31 (http://www.mhsaa.com/sports/btr/btfaqual.html).

I am surprised he hasn't gotten more notice before this.

Does anyone know what the record is for freshman in the 3200? This has to be close.

If Kevin continues to improve of the next three years he will be a very formidable runner.

He ran 9:14 earlier this yr.

Eric Hulst ran 9:00.8 (converted from 2 mile) in CA 1973, if I'm not mistaken, he still holds the record.

Hulst was running higher mileage in junior high school and running road races with his dad, I read on a California track website. Still, 9 flat (2 miles, not 3200m which is about 20m shorter) is very impressive!

no he ran 9:04 full 2 miles, so 9:00 3200.

I might add that I ran 9:24 for two miles as a freshman in Illinois in 1975. As good as that was, I knew that I had a way to go to catch Craig Virgin, who ran about the same in 9th grade but obviously meteorically took off thereafter. So I would encourage any talented 9th grader to be patient and enjoy the sport - and develop with a long term perspective in mind.

PAY - certainly this young man's achievements are laudable. But the great thing about running is that it doesn't matter where you come from, what you look like, how smart you are, or what kind of money you have when you line up at the starting line. Your comments are frankly immature - we all try to get where we want to go in running, no matter our backgrounds.

tell that to the guys over at the thread arguing about who the best white middle distance runner is in the world. or the guys who post about wanting kenyans to be barred from running road races in the US. unfortunately there are a lot of runners (many who post on lets run) who will only get excited about a runner if he is white.

The real question is how physically mature is he? and how fast will he be running in 4 years?

Why can't anyone just congratulate someone for what they are doing NOW rather than speculate how they will do in the future?

There are runners who only ran good when they were young, others who only ran good when they were in their 20's and others who only ran good in their 40's.

That might be true, but I didn't know what color he was and have no idea if his life is pampered. I doubt that it is. Just posting a time I saw that was fast.

Anyhow, hopefully he does take off and add to the wealth of distance runners now rising in the US.

Well, we wouldn't even be talking about this if we were only looking at "now". 9:19 in HS is not a very big deal if you're a senior. It's very good, probably all-state, but nothing worthy of any national attention. The fact that he's a freshman, and has the potential to be something very special, is why it's getting attention.
