Any science experts on here? I'm pretty well educated (Ivy league degree but not in the sciences) but am far from an astrophysicist. Can someone tell me if Hawking was a great scientist? Or is just a famous one?

Pretty sure he was famous before he was in a wheelchair?

No, he was not. He was diagnosed in the early days of graduate school.
But assuming he followed the same theoretical path then there is no reason to believe he would not have been and maybe more so.
Both
Hawking would be a little bit behind Messier but not nearly as cool.

Pretty sure no.
Got diagnosed with MLS at the age of 21.
His career was just getting started.
Did not get famous until more than a decade later.
I stand corrected then.
Well when he first won the Kaiser Roll in Bloomington MN, a local 10K, while in his wheelchair and shouting “Look ma, no hands,” some labeled him a showboat. But then as his reputation as a scientist evolved, Hawking became more famous for that than for his wheelchair racing, which also became more challenging as his condition deteriorated.
Steven Hawking was a scientist? I thought he was just that guy in a wheelchair with the funny voice. Huh.
I donnae think so wrote:

in fairness, it should be pointed out that the following are two distinct events:
1) Getting diagnosed with MLS
2) Being relegated to a wheelchair for transportation

Too funny!....???
What made Hawking famous was his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time". It was a bestselling book everybody was talking about but few had actually read past about page 5.

Probably close to Bannister's? ?
Would he have been famous if he was a woman, or not white, or not english speaking? Maybe not. Does that detract from him as a person?
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
