I have a freshman kid who is pretty talented and fairly motivated (he ran 5:22 for 1600 in jr high with no real training). His first cc season went poorly, as he decided to try and play on the freshman football team as well as do cross country. He tried to do both sports well and ended up being mediocre at both instead (long story as to how he came to do both)
Right now, we are just running easy mileage and letting any hard efforts happen organically. I give the kids mileage goals for the week, then let them figure out how to reach those goals. That's as organized as we are right now.
He has some friends who are significantly slower than him and he prefers to do most of his runs with them. They only go 2-4 miles on most of their runs. This week, his mileage goal was 30. His mileage went something like this.
M-3
T-5
W-3
Th-14 (took him about 2 hours).
F- 2
So, even if he runs only 3 miles total this weekend, he has reached his goal. Most of his runs, though, are well below the effort level that is going to create any actual improvement for him and I think he feels that he can make up for that all in one day. He says the 14 mile run wasn't that hard, though.
Anybody had an experience with a kid wanting to train this way? Did it work out? Did it fail? I had a couple of guys get really into doing long runs, at the expense of their other training, about 8 years ago (neither one had great track seasons). I want this kid to figure stuff out on his own, but at the same time, I don't want him to be discouraged when his results aren't very good.
