"The N.Y.P.D. is responding to reports of an explosion of unknown origin at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.
"Commuters underground nearby began to flee after a loud, muffled sound was heard around 7:20 a.m. in the Port Authority subway station.
“'This was an attempted terrorist attack,' Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference this morning. 'Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals.'
"There are no credible threats against New York City at this time, Mr. de Blasio added. There will be added security throughout the city today.
"The suspect in custody is Akayed Ullah, 27, Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said at the news conference, adding that the suspect had been was wearing an explosive device and he was in serious condition at Bellevue Hospital.
"The Fire Department said that at least four injuries had been reported. The police advised people to avoid the area.
"The blast prompted the authorities to evacuate one of the busiest transit hubs in New York City."
