Dammit Smoove!!
I got ambushed. I was making a bee line for the beer taps.

At least you look like a runner. I look like a beer keg with chicken legs.
I haven't read this in a while. Maybe there is something in it for you. Sounds like we are at opposite ends of the FT-ST spectrum.
Ah, yes, I have this bookmarked but haven't had the time to read it all yet! Will read now!
Would it be a realistic goal to shoot for 1:25 for a half marathon in the beginning of May? Coming off of just under 1:30 last month
R4F - that seems realistic if you have the time for some volume imo I went from fat and not running any to a 1:24 (the blow up race) in 14 months. Just put steady miles in the bank week in and week out.
Remind me of a few things: how long have you been running? Other recent race times? General volume?
5 minutes is a big jump, but certainly not out of the question.
The good news is you never have to decide up front. You can have the idea floating around in your head and run some interim races to use as measuring sticks and to help you establish a final goal.
Lol RRR looks badass in that photo
Sorry to ruin the intelligent and fun and discussion taking place above but I was wondering if anyone had any advice about how to pace a 1000m (1k) time trial? I've decided to run a hard almost 100% effort (not killer, puke your guts out, sucking in air for your life 100% effort) 1k on Monday to gauge middle distance fitness.
Not sure what I can really do; I think my unrealistic-but-perhaps-there's-a-chance goal is 3:07 or below but i feel 3:12-3:17 or so is what I should aim for.
Of course RRR looks badass in that photo. I cannot conceive of him not looking badass.
I have really enjoyed your posts, misser of jamin, and I am glad you have joined the gang here.
I went from 1:33 to 1:26 in one month... I cramped up both times but less for the second race lol
haha thanks very much OR, very happy to hear it :D
Goes without saying your posts are something to definitely look forward to as well, have to congratulate you on the ridiculous marathon performance you put on show a few days ago. Was gobsmacked to see negative split that big and have something left in the tank still lol
RRR def increasing my volume. Smoove my race times are much slower than what they'd need to be for that time. 5k in August was 19:23. 10k in Sept was 40:57. I have a 5 mile this Saturday. I know to train to current fitness but wasn't sure if my fitness could drop that much in 6 months. My mpw has been in low 40s but I expect to average mid 50s this next period. I think speed is holding me back and being I've never trained short intervals or repeats it'll be interesting when I hit that phase
R4F- you can do it! I am def not a talented runner by any means but started running Jan 2016 ran 5k in October 19:20. Did volume all winter and ran 36:11 in march .. which is slightly my best race so far. Equivalent to 17:26 5k-1:20 half. Hope to get under 17:20 on the trot and cut 2 mins off in a year. So def doable. Just stick w it! At least for me when times come it's small small small then big jump. Good luck.. hard work everyday pays off.
I'm way behind on getting caught up here, so sorry for the interjection that's probably way off the topic on page 9 or whatever we're up to, but here's my answer to this question:
http://gawker.com/5898771%2Fhave-a-freaking-goalAlso congrats to last weekend's big achievers OR and RRR for reaching some freaking goals.
Thanks RRR. The increase in volume has definitely helped my longer race times. For whatever reason not so much on the shorter races(5k,1 mile TT). I don't think I'll ever get to the volume you are doing and seems like I'm less talented than you. I was just looking ahead for something to get excited about possibly doing. My legs are currently getting used to adding another day.
Serious question asks, "what motivates you?"
-For one hour per day I can feel good about myself, no matter what is going on in the rest of my life.
-As a competitive person, racing provides a good outlet
-As a social person, the 2 times per month I run with a "running friend" are important
-As a quantitative thinker, the specific measurement of you against the clock is fulfilling
-As a person who used to drink too much, it gives me motivation to be a grown up
-As a person from a family with heart disease on both sides, it provides a safeguard for the future.
Plus, I like wearing short shorts.
And there it is, TRUTH comes out:
I too like short shorts. A plus in Florida- running topless!
I also enjoy the topless running. Way too many clothes in the bs weather
I've run 3 marathons and have failed to cross finish line wearing a shirt every time.
I also dump a lot of water on my head, so usually it's for drenched based reasons.

Same. When it's warm def no shirt. I run hot no pun intended. Even this morning it was 34 and I ran in shorts a t shirt gloves and a beanie. Perfectly warm.

Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
