One of the more ignorant takes by staff member Cory Mull include doubting the FM girls' ability to bring it when it matters. They broke the previous team-time record at VCP, which was held by a national championship team mind you, by about 10 seconds per girl. Yet he thinks Great Oak and Naperville North will have some tactical advantage that throws FM off their game at nationals. Has this guy not checked the scoreboard over the last 11 years at NXN? 10 wins and 1 runner-up. This may be their best team ever.
Cory Mull is also not convinced Katelyn Tuohy is on another level because the race she just ran is only 4K. He thinks Kelsey Chmiel and Grace Ping are going to be too much for her over 5K. Meanwhile, it appears Tuohy could go top-10 at NCAAs in Louisville. Co-host Brian Diebel is clearly frustrated with Mull's lack of ability to be objective or listen for that matter. To his credit, Diebel has clarity when it comes to assessing the high school XC scene.
I have to think Mull is on the board that does the rankings, unless they've found someone else to botch them.
As an example, the girl with the fifth highest speed rating in the country, Maddy Denner is not even ranked in the top 25. For reference, she ran 16:59 at Woodward Park recently to become part of a very select group to break 17:00 there. Those who have run faster are all national standouts; multi-national champion Sarah Baxter 16:40, multi-national champion Julia Stamps 16:43, national champion Claudia Lane 16:45, national champion Amber Trotter 16:55, Fiona O'Keefe 16:57 (10:00 3200 and 15:56 5000) and Destiny Collins 16:57 (9:53 3200). I'm going to go out on a limb and say Maddy Denner is definitely in the top-25 in the nation. This past track season Maddy won the CA state meet with a 4:44 1600 then came back to finish 12 seconds behind Claudia Lane in the 3200 after running a tactically questionable-at-best race where she started out in the back and had to weave through the field.
If you have issue with MileSplit, this is a good place to talk about it. And in case it's not clear, you really shouldn't have a public opinion without consulting with me first. But who doesn't know that already, right?
