It was definitely his favourite song. He once played it twice in a row- it's on YouTube.
Another classic from that era. The Ruts they had a really hard edge but still a good tune
https://youtu.be/zCkNu9OxThcIn a Rut also a definite song. Dead Kennedys had definitely heard this.
Check out Don’t Sleep. Dave Smalley, probably best voice in punk, teamed up with my friends and play that old school 90s punk sound.
Nice! I hadn't heard the Ruts before. Will have to check out more of them.
I'm more upset about the lack of mentions of THE CLASH although I recognize they are genre-defying.
I can only hope it's because the various people posting on this thread assume that OP is already familiar with the Clash.
If not, or if OP only knows the hits off London Calling and Combat Rock, then I'd highly recommend checking out the original UK release of The Clash. Or at least search YouTube for White Riot, I'm so Bored with the USA, and Garageland.
This might go against the geneal consensus here, but I kind of like Green Day's early stuff (pre Dookie).
Has Iggy Pop been said yet?
A good primer for the early 80s punk sound would be the soundtrack to Repo Man
The MC5. Not really punk, but definately cultivated their own sound.
Nobody said Rancid yet (maybe I missed). I went to emementary school with Lars Fredrickson and lived down the street from his bestie, Ben Zanotto.
When I listen to punk these days, it goes something like: Bad Religioin, Pennywise, etc....The super angry early nihlistic stuff is a little hard on my 46 year old ears now.
A really good documentary about punks that had grown up is "The other F word" (F is for fatherhood). A lot of pretty decent music in there and a lot of youth angst converted to middle age agnst about having to crank out angsty stuff for kids full of youth angst.
The Story So Far.
Four Year Strong.
more pop-punkish though. great guitar work, especially from FYS.
Points for bringing up Lazy Cowgirls. Great Stooges-influenced band.
