Are they safe to use and if so how much should I take. I have been struggling with falling asleep and am tired of rolling around and getting less than 6 hours a night.

I'm completely biased, because I use melatonin.
I can't recall off the top of my head how much the dosage is, but it isn't a lot.
I personally really benefit from the use. Combining it with a routine schedule where I go to bed at the same time every night (this is pretty important), working out everyday, and drinking plenty of water and eating well. I'm able to fall asleep within minutes now and sleep through the night excluding getting up to use the bathroom.
Plenty of people say it is bad because you become dependent. I never had this issue, as I've gone a week without it just recently. However, I don't see a terrible problem with becoming dependent. It really isn't that expensive and good quality sleep is invaluable.
So, I would say go get some.
Alternate them
with Valerian Root (1000mg) one capsule
and Chamomile capsule (Whole Foods), one day when
you need to get some sleep, next day
take a melatonin.
Chamomile tea (two bags) is good too just before
bed, just don't take the Valerian root as Valerian
root can cause elevated liver levels.
I would caution you on this, I've been taking melatonin on a nightly basis and I've had to resort to taking like 8 pills a night to help me get to sleep. It's helpful when you have a regular sleep schedule and have to change it up for a trip or something when the times are different or for shift workers but it is not effective with insomnia, it may be somewhat helpful at first but in my experience it has not affected my ability to fall asleep after a while. Look into progressive muscle relaxation as an alternative
I've been taking melatonin and it definitely helps sleep though going to bed at the same time etc helps a lot too. You do gradually have to take more though and I try not to take it on Saturday nights as I don't run on Sunday and days like that. Just for reference I started taking 1mg night and am now taking 3mg because 1 is no longer effective. I take it about a half hour before going to sleep and read a book or something calm for that half hour, usually I can set the book down and fall asleep in 5 minutes with this. Normally it takes m 1-1.5 hours to get to sleep without the melatonin and only reading a book.
I've used melatonin for years. I take one 1mg capsule about 20 minutes before bedtime. I also take a 500mg Valerian Root capsule at the same time. Both are very mild sleep aids.
By the way, I've also taken Ambien. I would NOT recommend it.
Don't take melatonin if you are in the USADA testing pool. It's purity can not be guaranteed as it is not a regulated supplement.
Sleep is overrated. Don't believe everything you read about needing 8 hours every night.
You'll learn to love insomnia and figure out that being up for three days straight is a piece of cake.
MAGA
They really put me to sleep, but unfortunately give me very bad gas the next day. I took some the night before a morning race and "blew" everyone away at the start line. 😄
I used them for a month recently. 1 tablet. It really knocked me out. Would get really sleepy. Had to fight it if I wanted some sexy time with my wife. Off them now and am all good.
This post was removed.
I recently turned 40 and began having trouble falling asleep for the first time in my life. I used to fall asleep the minute my head hit the pillow. Then suddenly, I was tossing and turning all night.
I bought melatonin pills, and one pill would knock me out all night, with wildly vivid dreams. Eventually, I guess I adapted, because I slowly went back to tossing and turning all night. I was unwilling to up my dosage because I didn't want to end up having to take a whole bottle just to fall asleep.
So if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears.
I won't advocate taking a pill if you can help it but long lasting benzodiazepenes can be helpful if you have severe insomnia. Valium or Klonopin. They're sort of a last resort though and you won't sleep as well. They act similarly in the brain as alcohol so you could just have a couple beers if you're wound up tight at night.
I used to have same symptoms when i was getting any amount of taurine ( red bull and other energetic drinks has it ) and from painkillers like https://worldpharmazone.org - i had some severe pain back there and had to go to doc to switch pills as i was getting worried about my heart was feeling about it. And yes, it turned out it was some weird allergic reaction and i was totally right that i’ve informed my doc about it. If i had proceed taking them, the consequences could have been really scary

Sure, meth not melatonin
I take it occasionally, 1/2 mg sublingual. It works almost instantly. With melatonin, more isn’t better: it’s not a sleeping pill; it tells your body it’s nighttime. Taking more than 1/2 mg is like flipping the switch in your bedroom multiple times to turn the light off, so pointless. Also, higher doses will make you drag during the day because the excess melatonin stays in your system too long. People don’t understand this so Target and such only sell high dosage pills. Get the sublingual low dose pills from Whole Foods or a vitamin store instead.
Joe Rogan had a sleep expert on once and on melatonin tablets he said they are just a placebo effect.

I don’t know who Joe Rogan is, but you do realize your body produces melatonin anyway, right? Your pineal gland secretes it. When you’re exposed to blue light when it should be nighttime, that production is suppressed. You can replace the melatonin your body is NOT producing by taking it orally.
There is a significant placebo effect involved in the studies of oral melatonin efficacy, but it has to do with higher doses not being more effective and with people who think it improves their quality of sleep. Melatonin is just the switch that lets you fall asleep, that’s it. That’s why its best use is for jet lag or shift workers.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Walker_(scientist)Most melatonin pills you can buy contain 3-5mg of melatonin, which is way above the proper dosage and can actually reduce sleep quality.
MIT did a study on lower doses of melatonin and found around 0.3mg was the optimal amount

I think a lot of people who don't have good results with melatonin just way over dose.
What I do is buy the 5mg gummies then cut them into eights and it works pretty well
