Hi, so I finally visited my Dad in California. He's lived there 20 year's. My wife came with me as well and fell in love with the State.
Pros for us 24/7 sunshine. You can litterally exercise 24/7. Plus swim and run at night. There are lots of places to hike and relax at the beach.
Jobs aren't to much of concern for us. I work as a psych tech and found 40 jobs with the State in my field. Though currently my wife and I are trying to be accepted into nursing school. Like to be registered nurses before heading out to Cali. Wife works as an LPN/LVN.
Gas prices are about 40 cents more a gallon out there then where we currently live. Gas taxes and property taxes are much lower in Cali than where we live in CT. Average house in areas looking in Cali are about $250K more than here and rents are about $500 more for a 1 bdrm in Cali. Pay is about 50 to 75 percent more in Cali that's after taxes so not that bad. Food prices seem less expensive than where we live, but only bought food in the OC area.
My wife and I are hoping to visit San Fran and Sacramento area to get more a feel for Cali.
Only con I can see is being away from family and friends.
The other option is another State exploring. Have family that live in Virginia in Charlottesville. I like VA close to family and friend's, 5 to 6 hr drive. Think an hr or 2 plane ride. Get 4 seasons and a mild winter most of the time. Seems to be a healthy State with lots of camping and greenways. Close to the ocean.
What's your thoughts on VA vs CA?
If living in VA only concern is be making the same up here, $20-$25 an hour, as nurses down there. Not sure how far $80K to $100K can get you in VA. Average home prices do seem higher than average pay.
Thoughts and feedback...
Thanks.
