Mick has to feel pretty good about his recruits going 1-2-3 in the 800 at the Division 1 state meet. 800 running (among other things) has been a huge deficit for the Badgers. Belson and Koch are probably going to be 400-800 types, Fellman a 800-1500 guy.
Big winner continues to be UW-Milwaukee though. All relative of course. But they were able to follow up their two stars from this past year (Tagliapietra, Sippy) with two more promising stars. Wenzel wins the 1600-3200 in D2, Fitzgerald with a 4th place 800 and 4x8 title.
Hard to tell how much Fellman and Belson will improve at UW. Both were great freshman and definitely showed out their senior years but at the same time they both seem to be a little tapped out. Nothing against them as people/runners just a general observation. Koch should be a solid 4/8 guy for the badgers (more of an Ellis type).
Wenzel from Valders might be the most underrated runner from his class in the state. Won the D2 1600 closing in 58.4 and the 3200 closing in 59.7 with big lifetime PRs in both races. I believe he’d be a podium athlete in both D1 races if he was at that level. Jack raced very well and picked up a nice 800m PR in finals after a solid outdoor season. The rest of Milwaukee’s recruits were lackluster this past weekend but their lifetime PRs do show a good amount of talent.
Will be interesting to see the recruiting battle next year if guys like Boz, Meinke, and Rowen choose to go out of state instead of UW where those recruits would normally go. That gives the Badgers the choice of going for the middle of the pack guys who normally go to Marquette/UWM/Lax or going heavier on foreign athletes/out of state recruits.
The biggest surprise of the 2018 recruiting class is UWO. I saw commitments from Steven Potter and Wesley Schiek. How on earth did UWM/Marquette/UW not land either of these guys? Schiek is probably the biggest talent of the whole class running 9:13 after a full playoff basketball season. Shame he ended up in the WIAC.
Next year’s recruiting should be a lot of fun to follow.
