The US National Debt is about $20,000,000,000,000, roughly $60,000/per capita and roughly $120,000/per Federal taxpayer. Isn't it time to encourage scientists to seek non-gov't funding?
NASA, for example, I believe is increasingly outsourcing to private enterprises such as Blue Origin, Spacex, etc. Presumably this will lead to more accountability and provide a profit motive as well so we don't end up with situations like AMTRAK (though not a scientific entity, still a good example of government unaccountability) which loses money year after year, decade after decade. Why shouldn't other government science agencies and researchers seek funding from private sources (hedge funds, private equity firms, etc.)?
