I went to my local Comcast office the other day to try to get my monthly bill down. I was successful. But the odd thing is that my overall bill was cheapest only if I got xfinity home security. The security involves installing cameras in my abode so I can always keep an eye on what's going on remotely via my Comcast account.
Without it I was told I would have to pay $10 more even for the same cable tv and internet service. I didn't want a home security service and told them it made no sense. But that wasn't going anywhere so I resigned myself to just get the home security to save money. I set an appointment to get it installed.
But the more I think on it, it seems weird and even a little creepy that Comcast is virtually paying me to have it installed.
For one thing, I'm single and live in an apartment. I don't have much to steal. I live in a reasonably good neighborhood. For my situation its just not necessary.
But also, I think there are legitmate reasons to be concerned about government spying on its citizens. I don't think I'm that paranoid. In the wake of the Snowden revelations I find it very plausible that secret government programs can make up any rationale they want to make Comcast give access to client accounts. By letting Comcast put cameras in my apartment it seems all to easy for the powers that be to spy on me.
Am I wrong about this? Am I being overly paranoid? I welcome any comments.
