Kyle Merber and HOKA NYNJ run 16:12 to break 4xMile WORLD RECORD!!

I edited my post. Their tweet has one set splits and their article has another. I guess I'll take the time to figure it out from a timing site which lists lap by lap splits (plus the first 236 meters).

Based on that, it looks like the first 1636 meters was run in 4:09.35, the next 1600m was run in 3:58.39, the next 1600 in 4:07.19, and the last 1600 was run in 3:57.88.

Noticed a few good results from them on the Indoor scene recently.

The Heartbreakers are a new club in Boston based out of the local Heartbreak Hill Running Company (as if Boston needed yet another running club).

In all honesty though, it's still an impressive result. I could get all my fastest buddies together and we probably couldn't even pull a 17:30 even if we were all in shape.

For future prediction purposed we might use PR plus 6 seconds as a relay leg expectation.

It kind of makes me laugh to see someone say that this is what the sport needs. 4 professional runners just ran the mile averaging what amounts to a roughly national-class high school time, nobody within even 10 seconds of the indoor world record. They averaged 15 seconds off the indoor record (already slightly soft) and 20 seconds off the outdoor record. I love following professional track and field, and this literally could not be more boring. There are hundreds of guys from Kenya or Ethiopia that you could field a team from on any given day to handily beat this "record".

Then get those Kenyans and Ethiopians to break the record, why not?

It would have been great to see some other teams in the race with them so there would have been a better pace throughout, but we're not there yet for this particular event. Best case scenario is some other club runs 16:08 or so in the next couple months, then we have that team and NJNY go head-to-head during the outdoor season.

But no nation has and if we can get some interest in this event by Americans to foster and interest in American running it's a wining proposition If the records are soft it just might prompt someone to attack it.

World Relays would be a great stage for a 4x1500m more "Professional' version ... ;)

I too follow pro running but an afternoon at a HS meet with no record book, stopwatch and program still brings me joy. A honest effort is always worth a round of applause. The exhilaration of a mile victory is just as real at five minutes as it is at 3:50.

I completely agree, take any 4 pro nike guys and they would make a joke of this record. Put centro and jenkins on a team with 2 410 high schoolers and they could run 1605ish.

Galen rupp ran an 807 full 2 mile, virtually the same pace as this relay run by 4 guys.

Look, this record was/is still soft. But some of the hyperbole is exactly that.

This event is run every year at Penn by high quality college teams (many with sub 4's on them)OUTDOORS,and this time would be # 8 All Time on that list.

So the "put a HS all star team together" crap is insane.

It is really hard to run a high quality 4 x mile so far out in front and solo. Guys rarely run near their Prs. so it never adds to what people think it should.

no way is cam running close to 354 right now, and I'm not sure galen can get to the 357 either.

I would be curious to see what the bowerman boys can put up. Lacking the front end firepower of NOP, but jager and lomong have already run 356 this year, and hill is probably in at least that shape based on his millrose 2 mile. If they can get a 4th guy at 4:00 (which if we are including non-americans is probably well within the capabilities of someone like ahmed or hughes at this point), they would be in the 15:45-15:00 range as well.

Of course if we are including foreigners, NOP throws farah in there and that changes the entire ballgame.

I think they would be capable of running the necessary times, might be tough to break 16 solo. Any other teams looking to run it with them? Where would they do it outdoors?

Editor's update on Feb 17: They've broken the 16:16.67 record by running 16:12.71. The splits according to a Citiusmag.com article were Cabral, 4:04; Palmer, 4:01; Crawford 4:07, Merber 3:57. Their tweet has different splits.
