People of Letsrun, here are some major expenses that my parents have helped me out as an adult. Let me know how spoiled I am compared to the average millennial.
My parents paid my way through college, about $36,000 total over 4 years. My last two years I was an RA, so I got free room and board, so I helped some there. After I graduated (age 22) it took me 6 months to get a job, during that time I lived with my parents for free. My parents paid my first month's rent on my apartment. They also continued to pay my cell phone bill, car insurance, and let me have one of their credit cards to pay for gas for the next two years until I got married.
My wedding was completely paid for by my wife's parents (mine helped too). After getting married (age 24), my wife and I got our own cell phone plan and I gave my parents back their credit card, since I was making good money by that point anyway. My dad then bought a new car for us ($15,000) and even put it under his own insurance policy (my car was still in his name as well). Around this time I also got a $10,000 inheritance from my late grandmother.
A year later (age 25), we bought a house, and my dad handed over the titles to both cars so that I could combine my new auto policy with my homeowners policy. I was able to pay for the down payment myself (although the $10,000 inheritance from the previous year certainly helped).
Also, I've gotten $500 for my birthday and $1000 for Christmas every year since I was 18. I'm now 27.
Have at me.
