We aren't sure if CAS will allow them to do so but we've always believed intentional doping should result in a lifetime ban.

Here is Geb's quote:
"Our stand is no excuse toward someone who has cheated. As of today, any athlete who has offended will be hit by a life ban,"
This is awesome news. I really hope other countries follow their lead.
a great decision, although the inaccuracy of drug tests, in countries unlike Ethiopia that actually drug test, does suggest that a lifetime ban is problematic.
Good to hear.

You should have waited until April 1st to post this "story". All fake blather because everyone knows Ethiopian officials, as well as Kenyan officials, Cuban officials - and many more - make the Russians look like saints, and doping in these countries is condoned and protected by behind the scenes maneuvering by WADA, the IAAF and more.

You may want to call Rita Jeptoo and Mathew Kisorio to tell them this.

Tell them what exactly? Neither are Ethiopian.
Yes, but you say on the home page they will NOT be given a lifetime ban

Tell them that doping in Kenya "is condoned and protected by behind the scenes".

But indeed, a proposed lifetime ban is an interesting and positive development. Add to this the criminalization of dopers in more and more countries, and get the police to raid certain groups, and we might actually start to inhibit doping. Too bad that Lord Coe is opposed to this, just as he is opposed to transparency.

Yes, but keep in mind that it wouldn't be LRC without a glaring typo or grammatical faux pas in the site's breaking story title.
The bigger question is, how long will the error go uncorrected? We're at about 12 hours and counting at this point. Too cute.
Is Geb going to retrospectively ban himself?

Agreed. This Sounds like a great way to protect his and bekeles accomplishments. It just means the next gen will suck since they can't get away with it like he did.
Maybe I'm just cynical.
Awesome as in the death of the sport as we know it? gg athletics
I don't agree with the lifetime ban. I think that's too harsh for those who want to learn from mistakes and improve themselves but I do agree with criminalization of dopers/drug cheats. Perhaps lock them up for first 6months and forfeit winnings while banning them for 2 years. Repeat offense should result in a lifetime ban from competition though and forfeiture of winnings. We don't need serial dopers. First timers can have room to learn from their mistakes but do it again and stay out.
Lifetime ban if they actually catch anyone
The usual window dressing going on here
I'm not willing to put a lot of confidence in the measure that is being proposed. This rule wouldn't prevent athletes from competing professionally, so it is kind of meaningless. Now, if it were coming specifically from the IAAF, then that would be totally different. That would mean a complete ban from all distance races in the world.
If an athlete tests positive, and gets a 2 year ban from the IAAF, and then gets a lifetime ban from Ethiopia, that athlete can still go compete under his/her own identity after the IAAF ban is up.....Plus an athlete can easily go run for some other third world country, and get top dollar doing so.
This is just verbiage to generate headlines.
I think it funny to hear HG saying that, considering he is retired.
