I have a very muscular thigh area, and it is clearly extra weight, that I don't want to carry. But since I cant change them, what should I do to make them beneficial to me as a runner?

Dont feel alone. I went from body building 4to5 days a week to running about 40 to 50mpw. I just got burnt out lifting all the time, spent more time driving to the gym/at the gym, and wanted a way to compete for something other than other people in a mirror staring contest. To the question though, my legs grew easily when i was doing barbell squats 4 days a week so i can relate to huge thighs. My thighs a year after giving up the gym life are still kinds big, but they're much more lean and not massive then before(i used to fill my jeans with a 30" waist at 5'-11" 170lb). Large thighs don't really benefit distance running, unless you only run up hill lol. They will eventually get smaller if you cut back on the leg lifts OR you start to run more than you lift. (Kinda the same thing) large thighs are more beneficial to sprinters not necessarily distance runners. Look at elites that run 1500m to marathons and you'll immediately notice larger thighs are not in the formula. So it depends what kind of running you want to do ultimately and how much you wanna run. Not to be confused with large thighs means you'll never run fast, but large thighs have more weight, more weight means more drag, more drag means well you get the idea.
Except of course the best guy ever from 5-marathon has larger thighs than any of his competitors.
Yes, large thighs are not too much of a problem at all. As the above poster said, just look at Bekele. Big thighs act as pistons to power you along.
What you should really worry about is excessive mass below the knee. Large calves/ankles carry a much higher energy cost than body parts closer to one's center of mass.

Cycling made mine larger and as I've gotten older I am MUCH stronger on hills. Lighter me was trash on hills. Larger, stronger thighs and a55 no doubt contribute to that.
Don't worry OP. You'll adapt to suit. Mo Farah and the stick Kenyans are not necessarily the rule.
You need to start putting those thighs to some good use. Offer your assistance to friends and family when they need help moving heavy objects.

If you are make then weightlifting is your event
