Nick Ryan of F-M is a Syracuse junior running sub-par times...what happened?

Everyone knew Fayetteville-Manlius' Nick Ryan during his senior year of high school. He was uncontested in New York and ended high school with 4:05/8:55 PRs.

He was the 9th SU runner across the line at PF. Ryan is a senior at 'Cuse, but he redshirted.

When he signed to Syracuse, Fox put it out there that he believed Ryan to be the best runner in the country.

At the Eastern 2.5 late 2012, Ryan was 7 seconds behind Cheserek and 10 seconds behind the course record.

A lot of people had given Ryan similar forecasts to those of F-M's previous stud miler Alex Hatz. But Ryan has struggled from the beginning. Injuries? Did Aris push him too early? Always like Ryan...hope dude can get it back.

Hatz was up and down. He did run 3:58 indoor mile as a sophomore; 3:39 outdoor PR.

But you're right...a lot of them flatline post high school.

It's crazy to see Ryan's 4:05/8:55 high school times and see hasn't even come close to running those in DI.

The FM thing has gone from bad to worse. Some of them are blaming the college programs they sign with (but that's preposterous).

It's too bad really. But college coaches take note, it's not working in their

post-FM years. I can think of one FM female who I hope does very well this year: however she would be the exception.

For as good as they are as team besides Hatz, Nick Ryan and Gruenewald I am not sure how many really elite men (say a top 15 footlocker NTN type) they have had.

Also wasn't Hatz an all American in the 1,500M? Even the best runners have up and down races / seasons but I would be hard pressed to say he didn't have a really good college career.

If anything it should emphasize how hard it is to be good at the D1 level, despite high school talent. With that said, great guys, great program, and their coach is a good guy at the end of the day. He gets the most out of that team.
