I'm a relatively injury-prone hobby jogger type (male, 36, 5 11', 175 lbs; 19 and change 5k pr; 1:24 half pr; 3:10 marathon pr) trying to go sub 3 in the marathon eventually. Average mpw is 60, peaking at 70 or slightly higher. I run in really heavy shoes: Glycerin 13 + super feet orange. This brings me to about 13 ounces or so of shoe.
My brother has suggested that it is absolutely crazy that I run the marathon in these shoes and has encouraged me to get something lighter, not necessarily flats but something in the maybe 8-9 ounce range, for the race itself. He thinks the odds of injury are not that high if I do most of my training in the heavy shoe and the rewards of going with a lighter shoe in the race are significant. If I do this I need to make a decision soon because I'll want to do a long run or two in the lighter shoe first to make sure I don't blister or hurt anything.
My question is: is the risk of getting injured in the lighter shoe offset by the performance increase I can expect? Am I essentially running with weights on my feet or is my brother overstating the gains I can expect by going to a lighter shoe. Any thoughts recommended.
