Washington Post:
“I don’t know why they did that,†Chelimo said. “I had to wait two or three minutes before they had me live on the TV. I thought they were trying to interview me because I’m a silver medalist. They should have told me what was happening. I can’t say for them. I don’t know what happened. I was just disappointed. It’s really sad for me, because I heard it from a TV guy. The whole time, I didn’t know."
This sounds like a really shady move. The only reasonable explanation that I could think of was that they also just found out, but given the fact that they were able to immediately show Chelimo video of what they thought the infraction was on a laptop, and show the entire watching audience, that explanation doesn't hold up. They should have done the humane thing and let him know of the disqualification before they came back live and tried to get an emotional reaction.
I think NBC really just wanted to try to appeal to millennials and get a hot "Paul Chelimo Reacts" video for their Youtube channel. Reaction videos are all the rage these days, right kids?
