Google Pat Porter and Lynn Jennings.
Pre
Forrest Gump had a pretty good cross country run.
Terry Fox too.
Craig Virgin

Ritz belongs on the short list.
Josh McDougal, Sam Chelanga, Edward Cheserek, Bob Kennedy, Steve Prefontaine, Gerry Lindgren along with those already mentioned
Adam Goucher.
In fact, you should get a copy of Running With the Buffaloes, tape a piece of paper with your name on it over Chris Lear's, and submit that as your paper.

Virgin is still the best and Jennings was a 3 time winner, 5 time medalist in world XC. 9 USA XC titles.
Add Pat Porter (9X US winner, and 4X in top 10 at Worlds, Tim Hutchings outsprinted him for a medal in 1984), and Deena Kastor (2X World Championships Silver medal).
Derrick, three time champ
Craig Virgin won the World XC 2 times and Lynn Jennings 3 times (not 5!)
Virgin still holds the Illinois H.S. state record, after 30 years of it's running on the same course!!!
