So, Maria Sharapova has tested positive for Meldonium and says she's been taking it for 10 years.
So, Maria Sharapova has tested positive for Meldonium and says she's been taking it for 10 years.
Seppelt posted similar figures in his series last night. Sounds like this is widely used and has been for awhile, especially in eastern Europe (and wherever their doctors and dealers land). After so many positives I'm wondering who is still going to take it?
Now that Sharapova has tested positive, this thread is super popular on google. LetsRun.com visitor Jake Shelley wrote a great 1,270 word article on "What Is Meldonium/Mildronate?"
You'll find out a lot of info there about the drug that both Aregawi and Sharapova were busted for. if you read it here:

Jonathan Gault, if meldonium just got banned 1/1/2016 and has a shelf life in the body of 2 months, can't Aregawi claim a defense that she last took it in December 2015?

What is the source for the statement that some people are making that Meldonium remains detectable in the body for 2 months after taking?
2013 World track and field 1,500 champion Abeba Aregawi of Sweden tested positive for traces of meldonium. I've never heard of this drug before (although I'm guessing use of it is widespread - not likely that Aregawi was the first and only person who thought to give it a try).
From:
TT reported Monday evening that the A sample contains traces of the banned substance meldonium.
Studies have shown that meldonium improves energy metabolism in the heart muscle cells - and is used in treatment including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's, says Åke Andrén-Sandberg, a medical expert at the Swedish Sports Doping Commission.
- Today it can be considered reasonably safe to meldoniums effect can be traced to the mitochondria ( "cellular power plants"), which is interesting because mitochondria are found in all cells in the body, making it possible to meldonium could affect any organ in the body that can benefit a better energy metabolism, says Andren-Sandberg said.
- This has been used to some degree in the study of neurons and thus there are small studies (or hypotheses) to use the preparation after stroke as well as in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. One can not see that there is scientific evidence showing that the preparation has no effect in this context. There is a report which claims that meldonium increases alertness and another that increases learning ability.
The subject ended up on the international doping agency WADA's list only on 1 January this year.
Editor's update: Tennis star Maria Sharapova has also tested positive for this same drug. Now that Sharapova has tested positive, this thread is super popular on google. Tennis fans, a LetsRun.com visitor by the name of Jake Shelley wrote a great 1,270 word article on "What Is Meldonium/Mildronate?"

This was a fantastic writeup. Thanks for your article/post.

Trying to answer my own question, this paper doesn't make it sound like a normal dose of Meldonium would be detetectable after 2 months:
http://pilarmartinescudero.es/OctNov15/Midronate%20interferencia%20con%20cromatografia.pdfRegarding the administered amount of up to 2000 mg per day and the half-life of around 6.5 h, the estimated LLOD at 200 ng/mL for the initial testing assay and 10 ng/mL for the confirmation assay is suggested to be sufficient for a reliable Mildronate detection over a couple of days after
administration.
Maybe WADA is using a more sensitive test, etc., but 2 months sounds unlikely.

Maria Sharapova busted for same drug!!
Seems as if the majority of public opinion is understanding/dismissive of this discovery. They might even let her off the hook... Who here is gonna let Aregawi off the hook?
Based on that article, we can be certain that NOP are all using T3, and likely most other groups as well.

No worries, I've read a lot of good stuff on these boards so I'm very happy to add to that if I can
It will be interesting to see if there is a drop off in performances in the Olympics now that this drug has finally been banned. Long delay by the governing associations to ban it, given the rumored widespread abuse by athletes over the last several years.

Jos Hermens actually floated this defense to a Swedish paper in this article:
http://www.expressen.se/sport/friidrott/kryphalet-som-kan-radda-abeba-aregawi/But, as a poster above me (and as an anti-doping expert in that article) said meldonium should only stay in the body for a few days. If she was positive on January 12, it's likely that she had taken it within 72 hours of the test.
This drug is not approved by the FDA so Sharapova, who resides in the United States, didn't have it prescribed by here family physician here. Mildronate has been one of Latvia's largest export products for several years and is easily purchased online.
Hopefully, Telmisartan and Cynomel will soon be added to the banned substance list by WADA.

What you know? You just regurgitated articles on as well as wikipedia. Come on Shelly, you are better than that. I bet you your buds in Big Bear are on this shit!
Tennis follower commented on my question about Sharapova's bust.
That is unfair she takes it to treat her diabetes.
Lots of fans with their heads in the sand on this issue.
Athletes getting popped for this are failing an intelligence test.

Aregawi might reasonably be expected to claim that defense, if it is indeed scientifically plausible. But one of the LetsRun-linked articles (the one that was mostly an interview with her agent) indirectly quoted her as saying she had no idea how this drug got into her body. So, unless that was some sort of problem with translation, it sounds like she already blew that defense.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
