Go look up some of Canova's marathon training "special blocks" - he has had some people do amazing single-day workouts and mileage. One example:
10k @ 90% MP + 20k @ MP, do this session in the morning AND afternoon. To make it extra crazy, do not consume carbs between sessions, just vegetables and water.
Or:
AM: 10k @ 90% MP + 10k @ 102% MP
PM: 10k @ 90% MP + 12x1k @ 105%MP w/ 90s recovery
Nate Jenkins tried one of these and wrote about his first experience:

This does not seem so hard to me. It is essentially running a marathon at slower than goal pace with 8 or 10 hours rest between reps, some of which are only 1k long.
It is challenging because it is 42km, but other than that I don't see that it is too tough. And I am not posturing. I have done hard runs before where I did 7 miles in the morning at HM pace and 10 miles in the afternoon at HM pace. And YES, I was running too hard, but I do have experience with this stuff.
