Hi, I recently took the advice of letrun and joined my XC team at the start of the school year. In 2 months my 5k has gone from 20:20 to 18:45. II have around a month of XCleft then training for track. My current coach believes if I put in as much work as I have during XC I could runa 4:40 mile in track, do you see this as reasonable or not?
You're not at that fitness level yet, but your coach probably is looking at your basic talent level (like overall athleticism and stride efficiency), work ethic, and record of improvement. Definitely sub 5:00 by spring, and if your coach is experienced and knows what to look for, and if you keep working and avoid injury, you may well hit 4:40. It's not a sure thing and may even be a bit of a stretch, but it's definitely not an unreasonable goal. Good luck!
Don't worry so much speculating about what you can or can't run in the future or you may set yourself up for disappointment. It's still early on so I suggest you just keep training, have fun with it, and the improvement will surely come. Don't sweat it.
