I'm in high school, and I'm very much a negative-splitter in the 5k. At smaller meets, this works really well for me; I would start in around 10th place, then start passing people at the mile mark, and eventually work up to the podium.
However, I just ran in a crazy big meet, with around 50 varsity teams running all at once. I decided to stay consistent with my strategy, knowing I could at least snag a top 10 spot if I race well, but everyone at the meet, and I mean everyone, sprinted like hell at the beginning, and I ended up being boxed in behind well over 200 runners, and I couldn't maintain my pace when they settled. Since it was so crowded, it took an immense amount of energy to pass people (side stepping in between gaps, avoiding the crowded "tangents", etc.) I ended up placing 70th. Splits were 5:50, 11:05, 16:20, 16:55.
TL;DR: I start conservatively, other people start fast, I get boxed in once they settle into their race pace.
How can I deal with situations like these? I mean, even if I did go for a more even-split strategy, there will still be too many people to pass for me to get a decent time.
